City of Birmingham Sports Mount Rushmore - Memphis Blazer - 06-11-2018 08:50 PM

Saw a discussion of this idea on twitter about Memphis. Thought it might be a good off season thread.

What sports figures makes Birmingham's (not Tuscaloosa or Auburn) Sports Mount Rushmore.

Here's mine

1. Gene Bartow
2. Satchel Paige
3. Bear Bryant (reluctantly because of the number of games coached in Birmingham)
4. Bo Jackson

Does nascar count? I vote no, but if it does Bobby Allison might be on the list.
Charles Barkley probably has to make the list.

Strictly limited to City of B'ham - Pat Sullivan, Charles O. Finley, Harry Gilmer, Tony Nathan.

METRO B'ham opens up many additional possibilities (Fairfield, Hueytown, McCalla, Leeds, etc).

Typically I would say to NASCAR counting, but considering how big it has been in Birmingham, I would say for Birmingham, it counts. And Bobby Allison is a good choice.

My way of thinking is they don’t necessarily have to be from Birmingham, but their contributions to sports affected Birmingham.

That additional area moves the selection into a subdivision of the territory of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.

While I appreciate Bo, I don't think I'd have him on here. I definitely don't think I'd have Bo over Chuck.

B'ham had two race tracks I can recall. BIR (paved) at the Fair Grounds and the Iron Bowl (dirt) track in Roebuck. I mainly remember Bobby Allison, Neil Bonnet and "Red" Farmer as being dominant in the old days.

There was also Dixie Race track in midfield and Sayre track. My dad raced them all.

If you are talking about making an impact on the Birmingham sports scene then Art Clarkson would have to be included.

Yeah, I was trying to remember his name.

Replace Bo Jackson with him.
