Penny Is Building It The Way Tubby Should Have - Stammers - 06-07-2018 02:02 PM

Virtually all of Penny's recruits are in the range that should have been attainable by Tubby and a hard working staff after his 1st season; which is in line with an NCAA team that could overachieve to make the Sweet 16.

We will find out in the next year or so if Penny is able to close the deal on top 50 recruits to turn us into a team that can reach the 2nd weekend of the tournament. I am betting that he can.

It is truly amazing what a pzz poor job the previous staff did. Embarrassingly amazing, how Tubby, in good conscience, cashes those checks says a whole lot about the real Mr. Smith.

Tubby does not love basketball enough to put in the effort.

RE: Penny Is Building It The Way Tubby Should Have - Nobody4Prez - 06-07-2018 10:45 PM

best thing about this class is they are all top 200 players and will likely play 4 years of ball

I'd rather have a mid-elite squad cuz in 2-3 years they will all be experienced upper classmen

a well rounded roster of above average players is the key to making deep runs in the ncaa

butler and nova has proven the model

That is good.

But Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, Kentucky get great players and are always around.

But yes, good experienced players always a good thing. I'll take a five star too. Or two.

The roster is set for a couple 5 stars to walk in and lead us to the promise land

It is a legitimate hope that was unthinkable in the recent past.

Don't let Nova fool you, they get plenty of 4 and the occasional 5 star. We need a difference maker the way that Brunson has been for Nova. He was the 4 star that played like a 5 star.

Where I see the advantage to 3 and 4 stars is that most teams don't have 3 or 4 stars coming off the bench, provided we get the 5 stars. If the system allows them to shine, then your bench stretches a 2 point lead to 8 or cut a 10 point lead to 5 when your starters are out. Like Golden State that can wear a team down. These players will take on more importance when the one and done rule is eliminated.

Villanova had two 5* on last year's team (Brunson and Spellman). Plus five 4*. All together, they had six top 100 players.

Donte was the 7th highest rated recruit on the team and he was 108th. Their 8th highest rated recruit was #157.

The media made Donte DiVincenzo - the hero of the NC game- look like a scrub coming out of nowhere but in fact he was a four star with a .9341 24/7 rating. https://247sports.com/Player/Donte-DiVincenzo-34135

They have done it the same as Penny will hopefully do it. They aren't afraid to sign players that are ranked out of the top 100 and they don't exclusively sign top talent like peer schools in terms of results. Without the top 50 they hadn't been past the round of 32 for 6 years straight from 2009-2015.

2010 - 51, 60

2011 - 56, 107, 122, 274

2012 - 49, 57, 271

2013 - 76, 79, 358

2014 - 75, 81

2015 - 22, 124, 186

2016 - 20, 136

2017 - 46, 97, 200

To have a shot at a final 4 run/championship in 2019, we have to have 2 of Wiseman/Watford/Hurt plus another high level 4 star (Lawson?).

Exactly true and exactly my point. Without them we should be the type of team that Tubby should have had here; a tournament team that might overachieve and make the Sweet 16.

Tubby could have done better without question...

But how many of these local guys were already connected to Penny who clearly wanted the job. I don't think Penny was sabotaging but he definitely wasn't advocating either.

Penny was 100% sabotaging, that is a fact. What is also a fact is that Penny wouldn't have sabotaged someone like Shaka Smart or Gregg Marshall. So, yes Penny wanted the job badly before Tubby was hired so it is impossible to deny that his intentions were pure, BUT even if he didn't want the job, he had legitimate reasons to sabotage Tubby.

If you recall, this is similar to the way that Cal built his teams, with the exception of the many Memphis players. After a few years, he created a base team that hung around 3-4 years and then added the one and done players. You have to have the stability of a core team that you can add a superstar each year. As long as you keep building the core with 3-4 year players, you can have quite a run.

Not really...Cal almost always had loads top 100 guys on the team.

Shawne Williams was one and done but then you had top 100 Coop, Dozier, CDR, Joey and AA when Cal made his runs. As far as high school ratings go we are nowhere near that level of talent.

Dorsey and Cooper were not top 100, I don't know where you would get that idea, neither was Niles. Kemp and Mack were. Cal did an amazing job with the 2007 team.

I don't know but I grew very weary of the Tub lovers who kept repeating the "he does it the right way" nonsense. No, he uses that as an excuse. Plenty of coaches do it the right way and actually get it done. Penny is doing it the right way. There were a group of people on here that seemed convinced anyone who got a top 150 recruit was cheating because the Tub way says that you have to pay players if they are top 150.
