RE: Stadium Renovation and Construction Thread - HawaiiMongoose - 01-11-2021 05:12 PM

Hawaii's plan for its current on-campus facility is to add bleacher seating to increase capacity to "up to" 15,000 (although I'm not sure there's enough space to go that high). Also new field turf, a new scoreboard and speaker system, and an upgraded press box.

This seems to be the most viable interim solution until the Aloha Stadium replacement is ready.

Nice looking little stadium.

Agreed. I think Hawaii can get 15K in there but they better be ready to destroy some of that track. Sacramento St. did something like this back 30 years ago for a WFL team. Unfortunately the easy areas to build stands is in the end zones. They can build temporary stands over the track and still leave the running lanes open. Also, the Hawaii AD ought to call Syracuse and get the floor panels they use when converting from Football/Lacrosse to basketball.

Hawaiians aren't the smallest folks...so will 15K really be 15K? 02-13-banana

Why did the Maui option die? Was it the travel cost?

That stadium was much more open and could get a rehab.

Ofcourse, keeping it on campus you take out outside stakeholders like they would have in Maui.

I would assume travel cost, they would've had to have flown to every home game, which seems a little ridiculous.

It is a 30 minute flight...not exactly that taxing.

You still have to pay for a plane, and you have to transport your equipment too, which gets very expensive to fly, even over a short distance.

I also think it would be used against them recruiting wise, even as a short flight it's an inconvenience.

Is there even plans for an Aloha Stadium replacement?

I think two factors hurt the Maui option.

The first is that the large majority of UH fans are on Oahu, which has a population of nearly a million compared to Maui's 170K. A lot of fans might fly over to Maui for a game or two but to achieve anything close to FBS minimum attendance over multiple seasons the games have to be played where the fans are.

The second is that the stadium on Maui is county-owned and multiple legal agreements would have to be negotiated and signed for UH to put in needed improvements and play games on a long-term basis. Reaching agreements on cost sharing and revenue sharing could slow or tank the process. None of that is an issue on the UH campus where the facilities are under the university's complete control.

Yes but its capacity is lower

Yes, that's already a done deal. In mid-2019 the Hawaii state government approved $350 million in bond funding for an expandable 35,000-seat replacement stadium with a target completion date of fall 2023. The plan is to partner with a team of private developers who will also contribute to the project in exchange for the right to build hotels, offices and residential units at the site. The goal is to create a mixed-use entertainment district similar to those that have been successful in other cities.

However the plan ran into a snag due to a drafting error in follow-on mid-2020 legislation that would have enabled 99-year leases to be granted to the private development partners. The bill died when the legislature adjourned and that delayed the project for a year. In the meantime however the EIS process has been moving along, a conceptual design has been settled on and recently three development teams were chosen as finalists to build and manage the new stadium district complex.

Here's the conceptual site design that the State selected for the bidding development teams to base their detailed proposals on (I have to say I'm not a fan of the stadium's proposed C-shaped seating arrangement; it seems dumb to me not to maximize the number of sideline seats and I'm hoping it gets switched to a traditional bowl or U-shape):

[Image: web1_NASED-StadiumRendering-AerialView1-12092020.jpg]

All of the above is the backdrop for mid-December's stunning announcement that the Aloha Stadium Authority had run out of operating funds and was shutting down the current facility unless and until new revenue sources materialize. The original plan had been to keep Aloha Stadium open while the replacement is being built (the central grass oval in the conceptual design is the existing stadium site) and UH had expected to play games there through 2023. The university administration was taken completely by surprise and began scrambling to figure out where to play football games during the interim, which brought us to this week's announcement that UH will play on campus for the next two or three seasons.

What % of people who attend UH games would you say are from Maui and each island?

It's just an educated guess but probably no more than 10% of UH football game attendees fly in from the other islands.

If I were to guess the C approach is to allow the roof to canopy the stands for day games. The sun side is probably less than appealing and makes the facility better for concerts and such. I could see an option where the stage would never see the field and only standing fans would ever see the surface. I like it

You're right. The designers are selling the C-design based on sun protection and concert suitability. My concern is that the number of available sideline seats will be less than the 20K-plus UH football fans who've historically occupied sideline seats at Aloha Stadium (a 50K seat facility that has around 30K available sideline seats). Are some of those fans going to be happy settling for end zone seats or will they say to heck with it and watch the games on TV? If the C-design is implemented I foresee significant risk of reduced ticket revenue at a time the UH administration is pressing the athletic program to directly cover more of its costs.

I tend to vote for the traditional stadium design. Actually, I would rather forgo the end zone seats if one section has to go.

If for no other reason, sideline seats are far superior to end zone seats. Sitting in the end zone makes for some of the worst seating in all of sport. Mainly, it's the depth perception, but when the action is on the other end of the field it's nigh on impossible to even tell what's happening.

Some more info on Hawaii, looks like the plan is only 10k for the short term stadium

Hawaii can't be in FBS if they are only having 10,000 seats. Shoot, if they get by with this? Azusa Pacific and Central Oklahoma could be FBS.
