Pretty cool they're incorporating so many UAB elements into the design. This should be the default place where we put people up on official visits.

I spent 2 years there working the front desk in 1986 & 87. Probably hasn't been remodeled since then. LOL

Wasn't it a Radisson back then?

It was "The Birmingham Hilton".

- The lobby had just been remodeled, so the BHM Hilton was chosen to shoot a commercial for the property group that owned the Hiltons in the Southeastern U.S. The 2 gals I was working with, both were senior to me, but one was preggers and didn't want to be filmed, and the other you couldn't see over the desk, so I was in the Hilton commercial for the next 2 years. 03-lmfao

It was a Radisson after being a Hilton. Then Hilton bought it back and turned it into a Doubletree. The worst thing about that building was that it had budget issues during its initial construction and the facade was left undone, leaving raw concrete exposed. You can still see the plywood grain pattern left behind from the original forms.
Hopefully that will be fixed as well.

They tore down a motel for the soccer stadium and one or two became apartments. How many motel / hotel rooms does the UAB campus (including 5 Points South) now have to offer for public use?

More than 2.

Doubletree, Residence Inn, Homewood Suites, Hotel Indigo, and Courtyard Marriott. Just outside that boundry is SpringHill Suites and the new Hilton Garden Inn/Home2 Suites that are both within reasonable walking distance to campus.

No one was using that motel who was affiliated with UAB. It was a liability. In the time since that has been closed there have been like 4 or 5 hotels opened on or adjacent to the UAB campus
