NMSU Football 2018 - RobtheAggie - 05-02-2018 09:23 AM

http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2018/05/01/doug-martin-adds-two-to-new-mexico-state-coaching-staff/

"Chili Davis and Ronnie Pentz to the Aggies’ full-time, on-field staff. Pentz will serve as defensive ends coach for Martin while Davis will handle NMSU’s tight ends."

Chase Holbrook will remain on Martin’s staff and take over as quarterbacks coach.

Aug. 25 Wyoming Cowboys Las Cruces, NM
Aug. 30 at Minnesota Golden Gophers Minneapolis, MN
Sep. 8 at Utah State Aggies Logan, UT
Sep. 15 New Mexico Lobos Las Cruces, NM
Sep. 22 at UTEP Miners El Paso, TX
Sep. 29 OFF
Oct. 6 Liberty Flames Las Cruces, NM
Oct. 13 at Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Lafayette, LA
Oct. 20 Georgia Southern Eagles Las Cruces, NM
Oct. 27 at Texas State Bobcats San Marcos, TX
Nov. 3 Alcorn State Braves Las Cruces, NM
Nov. 10 OFF
Nov. 17 at BYU Provo, UT

My bet 5-7 If they can make it though the first 5 games, things get easier.

Not used to seeing the same team twice in one season, but I guess that's the life of an independent? Good luck, Aggies!

UTEP has been awful the last few years. I don’t see the Aggies having problems getting past the Miners. CUSA cellar dwellers.

They did it once before in recent memory. They played Idaho twice in the season. That is the life of an Independent whose name is not Army, Navy, Notre Dame, UMass and BYU.

We were scheduled to play Idaho twice in 2013, but SBC teams needed two more games after two member had left for CUSA. This year will be the first time we play a team twice in one season.

It almost happened but it didn’t. I hope it doesn’t happen for you guys this time too. Florida St has 2 FCS teams scheduled this year and next.

2019 is next year, but I saw San Diego State added a series with New Mexico State, playing at Las Cruces in 2019 and San Diego in 2023

They seem to be replacing UTEP in the September 14th game (Las Cruces). UTEP is still listed TBA, but they very rarely play OOC games after September. It would surprise me if they fell off completely. Does anyone know if that game will be played later in the year, say October 19th (I noticed Georgia State moved their date of hosting the Aggies to October 26th opening up the 19th)?

http://www.fbschedules.com/ncaa-19/2019-new-mexico-state-aggies-football-schedule.php

Besides UTEP, my eye is on Florida International as the most likely 12th for a 2019 and 2020 series. If it's not FIU it'll probably be a 2nd FCS opponent, as pretty much everyone else is booked for 2019.

Anyway, has anybody heard anything?

RE: NMSU Football 2018 - RobtheAggie - 05-16-2018 06:34 AM

The last time that UTEP and NMSU did not play was back when I was in school. It caused massive consternation. It was the season that NMSU played Oregon St at home when OSU was ranked 2nd in the nation.

I looked at UTEP 2019, they and NMSU have the following open dates that work.
12 Oct
19 Oct
2 Nov

There has been a given about New Mexico St in the Indy era: that they will always have century old rivals UTEP and New Mexico on their schedule. That’s a given. Right?

Yes

RE: NMSU Football 2018 - RobtheAggie - 05-16-2018 11:00 AM

I think that UNM is mandated by the state legislature, I might be wrong about that though. UTEP is a game that both schools need for convenience.

RE: NMSU Football 2018 - Stugray2 - 05-16-2018 03:16 PM

The last time they didn't play was 2001, due to some scheduling conflict UTEP had. Before that 1943-45 due to WWII, and then before that 1934, and before that 1917-19 likely due to WWI. Otherwise continuous since 1914.

I do not know the details of the current contract, and could not find anything online. But it seems unthinkable to stop playing.

Ideally the UTEP game will be played on 11/2 or 10/19, with some other G5 (FIU?) filling the other date. It's tricky, but even getting UTEP to play in October makes scheduling much easier for Moccia in coming years, as those September dates (witness SDSU) are gold.

I would think they'd play one of the October dates. UTEP probably wants the bye in November
