The rankings are based on the product. The Sentinel's rankings don't matter, but then the Athlons and other "don't matter" either.

Good publicity is better than bad, but you have to back it up with performance. What this team has done in light of the university's financial situation and image problems is nothing short of amazing.

I would agree that Athlon’s rankings don’t matter either.

People are only looking for their teams rankings in the list and then forgetting about the rest. It’s only good publicity if people remember where NIU is ranked, which they won’t.

This goes to show you the reputation NIU has earned the last 15 years. Is NIU one of the best 60 teams in college football? Not even close. Still though, good to see the program getting respect.

I’d put them In that 65-60. That’s pretty much the middle of the pack. There’s 45-50 G5’s worse than NIU and maybe 15 or so P5s.

On paper I think it's an 85 to 100 type team. I think people are underestimating how hard it will be for this team to score points given drop off in playmakers and a coaching staff not comfortable with big offensive plays. If not for the defense this would be a 110 to 120 team. This defense is going to get very very worn down though and NIU alcan only be in MAC west contention if the defense can survive massive OOC injury and if the offense can ar least move the chains a few times

This bullsh*t narrative you have regarding NIU football is continuously proven wrong each and every year. When will it stop?

I think in the 60-70 range is 100% fair for us as we sit right now. Nice to see a media outlet giving us a fair and reasonable grade, instead of sticking us in Mac-land to see if we battle our way out.

Until carey has no more say in who starts at QB, no input on play calling.or any other offensive decisions. Since he obviously cannot coach offense, why not just delegate ALL responsibilities to someone else.

Instead of attacking others, can both of you argue logical reasons why you do not think NIUs offense will have problems this year? Please step up the content

I'll bite. Why will the offense not suck? For starters: we have an nfl lineman (Max Sharping will be drafted next year) leading a pretty solid and experienced OLine, probably the best Oline in the MAC. next, Harbs is as good as any back we have had in the last few years a bulldozer & Jones is adequate. Next, our Qb is better than last year, even if you are not a Childers fan, there is almost always an improvement from Frosh to Sophomore season by virtually all players. Lastly, people are in a panic about our WR's but last I checked, Tears , brown and Wesley were all starters last year and are ALL returning.

That's to be expected. If Toledo is not ranked ahead of us, it is not a normal year.

I expect Toledo to be ranked in the top 10. We all know they are the absolute best at every position.

RE: Orlando Sentinel countdown - Djud - 06-29-2018 09:09 AM

The biggest issue I have with this article is not including Pugh and Cochran as Key Returnees, they will be difference makers this season. On the plus side we have the Freshman POY returning. On the down side, almost half of his total TD passes (7 of 16) came in two games Ball State and Bowling Green, both of whom were horrible last year. As stated numerous times, Childers improvement (and health) will determine the success of the season. Maybe as important as his passing will be his improvement in the running game.

I'm equally concerned about who could replace Luke Shively

Don't forget the MAC Media day.
They will get all the first place votes.
They will even get first place votes from Media who shouldn't participate they are that good.

I believe NIU was initially ranked ahead of Toledo, but the loss of Connor Schneider flipped the two in the rankings.

Either that or Barksdale transferring.

CRAP!!!!! When did Barksdale transfer? This season is already heading down the tubes.
