Joe College Football doesn’t care about the Orlando Sentinel’s rankings and even if he did he’s not looking at them like “Wow... Northern Illinois, that’s a program that deserves respect!”

AP/Coaches Poll are the only ones that matter.

you'd be surprised how many Joe C. Football's I run into who when they find out i'm an NIU fan mention how great of a program we've had for the last decade or so. every time our name gets plugged it creates brand awareness.

I tend to believe people’s opinion on NIU over the last decade has been formed by the awesome product on the field and has nothing to do with the Orlando Sentinel’s preseason rankings. Sometimes things like that don’t matter at all.

Miami (OH) at #63 04-jawdrop.... Who knew?

We get 'em at home in November.

The rankings are based on the product. The Sentinel's rankings don't matter, but then the Athlons and other "don't matter" either.

Good publicity is better than bad, but you have to back it up with performance. What this team has done in light of the university's financial situation and image problems is nothing short of amazing.

I would agree that Athlon’s rankings don’t matter either.

People are only looking for their teams rankings in the list and then forgetting about the rest. It’s only good publicity if people remember where NIU is ranked, which they won’t.

RE: Orlando Sentinel countdown - MaddDawgz02 - 06-25-2018 03:40 PM

The biggest thing to take out of things like these to me are just relative strengths and weaknesses. We kind of already know this for NIU, scoring will be very difficult but defense will keep the competitive in most MAC games.

RE: Orlando Sentinel countdown - randyfensfanclub1 - 06-26-2018 04:21 PM

I like the fact that NIU routinely gets ranked ahead of P5 schools in their rankings yet people still complain. They point out P5 victories or MAC as a whole gets no respect which is usually accurate, deserved. But then when NIU gets killed in a bowl game it's usually the coaches fault. That or the QB sucking or injured.

With the OOC schedule the Huskies have in 2018, we will know soon enough how good they really are, regardless of how they were ranked by anyone before the season.

RE: Orlando Sentinel countdown - Boca Rocket - 06-27-2018 08:28 AM

2 OOC wins would give NIU momentum going into a favorable MAC schedule.
3-1 sends a definite message.

This goes to show you the reputation NIU has earned the last 15 years. Is NIU one of the best 60 teams in college football? Not even close. Still though, good to see the program getting respect.

They have the potential to be that good, I think. I wouldn't put money on it straight up though.

I’d put them In that 65-60. That’s pretty much the middle of the pack. There’s 45-50 G5’s worse than NIU and maybe 15 or so P5s.

Not completely true. I remember NIU opponents and others that might be at the same tier and notice if they are above and below. The SDSUs, Marshall, USFs.

Ok to your point, I dont remember where they are on the list. Too much to remember in this world so I won't recall a preseason top 130 list.

To my point, I recognize them and they are then validated if they are high.

Of course you’re looking for opponents of NIU and similar G5 teams.

But we’re talking about the average college football fan.

The average football fan who people are dying to get respect from doesn’t follow the MAC.

Matt's got NIU @#60. Boy did they get that one wrong!

On paper I think it's an 85 to 100 type team. I think people are underestimating how hard it will be for this team to score points given drop off in playmakers and a coaching staff not comfortable with big offensive plays. If not for the defense this would be a 110 to 120 team. This defense is going to get very very worn down though and NIU alcan only be in MAC west contention if the defense can survive massive OOC injury and if the offense can ar least move the chains a few times
