Anyone attend the Big Blue BBQ? Any info to report? How was attendance?

RE: Big Blue BBQ - ODU True Blue - 04-19-2018 11:34 AM

Heard Trey and MJH Jr were not present.

And in equally surprising news, Haynes is having the biggest sale in furniture store history this weekend! Don't bring cash!

RE: Big Blue BBQ - odu09 - 04-19-2018 11:37 AM

Wow, I had no idea Randy owned a furniture store. To think he juggled so many requirements during his time here!

Attendance looked about the same as the previous few years. JJ said he expects the NCAA to go forward with the one time transfer rule this fall. No one at ODU is a fan of it. He expects it too be something to the effect of allowing a one time transfer with no penalty for any athlete with at least a 3.0 gpa.
He had just come back from a recruiting trip and is leaving again tomorrow. Does not sound like anyone is in the fold, yet.
They had heard rumblings of Trey leaving all year, just like we did, but had hoped he would realize it wouldn’t make sense. No one is going to give him the playing time or touches he would have here. VT, Georgetown, Maryland, and Illinois have inquired about him, but all are looking for back ups.

RE: Big Blue BBQ - Gilesfan - 04-19-2018 01:00 PM

I expect the transfer thing to go through as well from reading tea leaves.

Porter was an option for Georgetown because of Govan putting name in nba draft, but they signed the big guy from NC State (who I expect will be eligible this year with rule change) If Porter does go to GU, it will be because they don't think the transfer rule will apply this year. (The Georgetown president is head of the committee)

I’m really surprised more fans don’t attend these things and the Coaches’ Caravans, which I suspect may be done away with. It is really remarkable to have this level of contact with the Coaches. We have found JJ and Blaine Taylor to be very open when chatting one on one. We have had a couple of enlightening chats with Dave, as well.

I paid for tickets, then got caught up at work. Same reason I rarely get to the Bud on a weekday. I'm excited for this shindig at waterside, however.

Are Coaches going to be there? I was wondering if it was worth attending?

Thanks. I wonder if that will take the place of the Coaches’ Caravan? I haven’t heard anything about it this year and they usually do the first one in April or May.

I actually just tweeted to ODAF asking about the Coaches Caravan. Usually they have the dates out by now if they are having it.

I've never been to one, but has attendence been stable or gone down since Blaine left? I know they used to be much better publicized. Now I never hear about them until after the fact. Could be just that I have less time to keep up with this stuff.

There will not be any coaches caravans this year. The Big Blue Blast is taking the place of these past events.

Down more than a bit from back in those days. I/we also thought this year's was a little moribund. A lot fewer happy campers and less back slapping, hand shaking and so on than in the good old days (at least as my old brain remembers it). The wife and I were talking about it coming home and agreed it almost felt like a funeral. Alas, in some ways that might have been the correct mood but we thought more effort could have been made to pep it up. One more little thorn, look at the pics of all the players who got an award and notice 3 year starter, Senior Brandon Stith got "0" and never even got to go up on the stage to get a handshake in front of the crowd. That also seemed wrong to us but again maybe that is just us.

RE: Big Blue BBQ - Old Monarch - 04-21-2018 08:42 AM

I thought the attendance clearly reflected the curent enthusiasm for the program, meh.

RE: Big Blue BBQ - Monarch Homselr - 04-21-2018 10:34 PM

I think this year's attendance was a bit higher than last year. It's hard to compare it to previous years because of the new location.
