Wheelock/Boston U. Merger

Not sure what will happen to the Wheelock College sports team. Will they be merged into Boston U.'s sports teams?

Quote:Q: What happens to Wheelock's Division 3 varsity athletics programs?
A: Following the merger on June 1, Wheelock will be a unit within Boston University and will not have its own varsity athletic programs. Dwight Datcher, Wheelock Assistant Vice President and Director of Athletics, has been in touch with student athletes about this transition.

Q: What are the athletics/sports/fitness opportunities at BU?
A: Students will have access to all the amenities available to Boston University students, which include intramural sports, club sports, and the option of trying out for Division 1 athletic teams at BU. Information on intramural sports, club sports, varsity sports, and fitness amenities at BU can be found here: bu.edu/admissions/student-life/sports-fitness.

Q: I want to continue playing Division 3 athletics.
A: You should be in touch with Dwight Datcher, Assistant Vice President for Student Success/Director of Athletics at 617-879-2238 or ddatcher@wheelock.edu about transfer options. Student athletes who wish to transfer to play elsewhere must fill out a self-release form.

FAQs page about the merger. Wheelock's athletics no more.

Much as I can see a number of Southern DI and DII schools de-emphasizing athletics, I think that the acquisition of smaller New England colleges by larger universities is going to be an increasing trend we see in the future. I think that's just the reality of the finances in modern higher education.

Mount Ida students in good standing will be given automatic admission to our Dartmouth campus. I believe athletes from Mount Ida will be able to talk to the athletic staff from UMass Dartmouth about opportunities on that campus tomorrow (April 9th).

Looks like Wisconsin, Connecticut and Oklahoma could start merging schools as well just like Georgia.

I think we have two things happening here:

state universities consolidating to eliminate inefficiencies

Struggling private liberal arts schools getting absorbed rather than shutting down completely.

I think we are going to see both trends continue.
