Larry Brown will be at the Final Four - TIGERCITY - 03-29-2018 02:03 PM

Travelling with the Jayhawks. I'm sure that he and Penny will at least have a chat considering the respect the two have for each other. But what I really hope is that Brown is on Penny's list of coaches he is interviewing for the 1 spot. Out of their own mouths ---- Brown wants the job and Penny wants to hire him. If Bowen has given the go ahead than a deal could very well be done before the final game. BTW - With Brown Penny would be free to hire Miller. IMO that would be a pretty damn good staff.

Understand Bowens position but I do wish he'd just let Penny run his program. I think if we could get Brown in to teach the players that Penny, Madlock, and maybe Miller bring. Plus help both Penny and Miller we have our best chance at a national championship. Not sure who else Penny can bring that also brings Browns value there.

Why was everyone around here so upset when Pastner hired Luke Walton as an assistant coach but Mike Miller is considered a great hire? Look where Walton is now.

I was never upset about Luke Walton but I will say there is a difference. Walton was waiting on the strike stuff to be over with and was heading back. Mike Miller has been a part of the AAU scene here in Memphis and has connections with many players. Miller also has relationships with the boosters and other influential people in Memphis. Miller is also planning to make it a full time gig, not just something to do while he waits to leave.

Because he needed an experienced X's and O's guy and we knew Walton would be here for a short while. Luke Walton has a 59-99 career head coaching record in the NBA as well.

Fair enough. It was very transparent at the time that Walton was only a coach until the strike ended but there was valuable coaching he could do in the meantime. He was the definition of over-achiever in the NBA. So it never bothered me either. I now know more about Mike Miller's credentials than before the post. Thanks

Exactly. We are talking about a Top 10 Basketball coach of all time.

This is a total hunch, but I think Larry Brown thing is already done, but they want some time before announcing as to not make it look like Penny is just a head coach in title with brown doing the coaching. Just a hunch, we’ll see soon

I read an article last week that dealt with the concerns about Brown and NCAA sanctions. The recommendation was simple: A) Don't let him recruit, and B) Let him run practice. This guy, and his staff, turned SMU from a joke into a top 10 team. Think of what he could do here. The possibilities are intriguing.

And SMU went on probation in order become a top 10 team. Where are they now? Brown could get away with his methods at the blue blood schools. He wouldn't be allowed to get away with his methods at Memphis without the NCAA getting involved.

I would use Brown in more of a consulting role (someone to bounce ideas off), I do agree that I would limit his recruiting though. I believe that Penny is more than capable of running practices. One of the reasons that Brown was able to turn SMU into a top ten program was because of his illegal recruiting. The real key to coaching is 1. Players 2. Getting them to play hard and together 3. Sacrificing for the greater good of the team (getting them to accept the role that best suits the team) 4. and playing smart (which is directly connected to #1 key. X and O's are somewhat overrated in most sports in that if a player makes the shot, catch, tackle, throw, or play in the clutch the coach looks good if the player does not make the play, then the coach is second-guessed. For example, when a coach tries a trick play and football the coach is a genius or gutsy when it works and an idiot or should stick to the basic when the play is not executed.

Larry has wanted to be at Memphis for a long time

RE: Larry Brown will be at the Final Four - MemphisTigerPawr - 03-30-2018 10:31 AM

I'll really be shocked if Larry Brown comes on board. I do think Mike Miller is on the way though. Who knows who may have contacted Penny?

Memphis is where he wants to be.

Which is why he said don't let him recruit.

Im pretty sure he got in trouble for academic violations, not recruiting violations. But we will have plenty of recruiters. Let this man work in the gym and on the sideline. He is perfect for what HPH needs...

Actually Brown did get in trouble at both UCLA and Kansas, i.e. blue blood schools.

And SMU is doing just fine now. Won the AAC last season. Lost AAC preseason POY to injury this season, but were playing well before that. SMU has a very good coach and a shiny refurbished arena.

So your two points are wrong, but you do you.

They weren't put on probation because of recruiting violations. So if there were illegal recruiting going on, they didn't get caught.
