Loyola University-Chicago - BDB5yp - 03-04-2018 11:41 PM

They’re in the Big Dance for the first time since 1985. They’re on a 10 game winning streak. If they can turn around their program, so can we....... I grew up a mile away from their campus. I can’t remember them ever being good. 28-5 record is pretty stout.04-rock

They were absolutely terrible in the Horizon League. This year’s seniors were their first recruiting class after joining the MVC.

A key to their recruiting was assistant Bryan Mullins. He is young and driven with many connections throughout the state. I would love to see NIU beat everyone to the punch and hire him next year.

As a bonus, look at Porter Moser’s career record pre- and post-Mullins.

He's in his 7th year and this is the first time they've had a winning conference record. Helps that Wichita State left the conference. I watched their tourney and it was nice seeing all illinois schools in the semis. Wish we had some geographical rivals.

A great story for a program with a proud history.

Loyola made the sweet sixteen in '82 with Carl Golson, a 5'9" guard who transferred from Wisconsin and a 6"4" forward (can't recall his name). They are the only Illinois school to win the B-ball National Championship...1963.

If my memory is correct, I think they played Georgetown that year in the sweet sixteen.

Two years in a row a Illinois school makes it, Yeah! Lucas Williamson and Cameron Krutwig were both recruited hard by Huskies. Last time we played Loyola was 2013-14 season and we beat them at the Gentile Center. I was one of the 1600 who attended.

7 years for their head coach and they are going to the tourney and we are still one of the worst teams in the MAC

RE: Loyola University-Chicago - dekalb222 - 03-05-2018 01:46 PM

Huskiepride12, Last year they were 8-10 in conference. Porter was able to have some seniors this his seventh year and it paid off! Porter Moser, Horizon and MVC record last seven years looks similar: Horizon 1-17, 5-11, MVC 4-14, 8-10, 7-11, 8-10, 15-3 really helps to have upperclassmen. Seems like a great guy happy for them!

RE: Loyola University-Chicago - dekalb222 - 03-05-2018 01:53 PM

Monty’s 7th year was supposed to be: Porter, German, Wilson, Bradley, Maric, Thomas, Pauga, Key, McCarty and James. It didn’t turn out but the plan was good.

RE: Loyola University-Chicago - dekalb222 - 03-05-2018 01:58 PM

Mark Smith leaving U of I and so it begins the transfer parade!

RE: Loyola University-Chicago - HuskieTap22 - 03-05-2018 02:51 PM

Loyola also won 24 games in 2014-15 under their current coach. They won the regular season Las Vegas classic and the CBI post season tournament. Texas Tech and MWC regular season champ Boise were among the wins that season. That season blows away anything NIU has accomplished over the last seven years. This year’s MVC title and NCAA bid just adds to the resume. Another example of building a successful mid major program and right in NIUs backyard.

Huskietap22, not arguing Loyola this year isn’t great! Just pointing out it took 7 years to get over 500 in conference and it took having some guys become upperclassmen. Very happy for Loyola!

Sounds like a defense of Monty. Are you saying that next year NIU should win the conference and go to the Big Dance?

RE: Loyola University-Chicago - dekalb222 - 03-05-2018 03:30 PM

Defense of Porter, Monty and most coaches every journey takes its own unique path!

Nothing exciting will happen next year. As long as Monty is the ship's captain, it ain't sailing anywhere. I see a .500 conference record as the best we'll see. And that's only if we maintain the same core of players.

Maybe he needs to break out the oars.

It was actually 1985. The forward you are thinking about is Alfredrick Hughes. Golston hasn't been around much since he served 10 years in prison for armed robbery.

RE: Loyola University-Chicago - 7huskie6 - 03-06-2018 06:51 PM

Alfredrick The Great.

RE: Loyola University-Chicago - randyfensfanclub1 - 03-07-2018 12:27 PM

I see Alfredrick Hughes ever few months when I get my oil changed at the dealer in Homewood. He's a salesman there. Always dressed like a million bucks, has the snazzy suits on.
