Future of the Basketball Tournament - chiefsfan - 02-21-2018 01:16 AM

Mohajir gave an interview today that sort of made it sound like the SBC is looking at rotating the Basketball tournament between East and West based sites after the New Orleans contract finishes.

Arlington, Atlanta, and Little Rock were all mentioned as showing interest. I'd imagine Myrtle Beach would as well.

Is there a neutral site in Myrtle Beach? Coastals' venue is too small in my opinion.

In the conference history, attendance has been limited with no venue being too small. Most times the problem has been a too large venue making our tournaments look poor from an attendance standpoint. Second, Myrtle Beach does have the convention center which will house some 5-6000 as I recall which again seems plenty at this point.

I'd rather see a packed out 3,000 seat venue than an empty looking 10,000 seat venue.

Sure. As long as you disqualify yourself from the tournament as it would be a home game for your team. 02-13-banana02-13-banana02-13-banana

Preferrably something people can get to on 4 lane roads please.

Atlanta/New Orleans sound like the right types of places for this sort of championship thing

I would agree.

Need a destination City to make the trip more palatable/fun for the average fan.

RE: Future of the Basketball Tournament - TrueBlueDrew - 02-21-2018 11:15 AM

Savannah is building a state-of-the-art 9,000 seat arena. Would be cool to have the tournament in New Orleans and then in the New Orleans of the East Coast 04-cheers

This disqualifies the Dirty Myrtle...though I'd love for it to be there.

I guess we would use Ga Tech's arena?

I think if we do it West/East, we need to rotate it where everyone has a shot to send a crowd at some point. People don't travel to Conference Basketball Tournaments and spend a week anymore. The people who attend are either the small groups of retirees who attend every game anyway, or fans within a reasonable drive distance who could pop down for a game or two.

The downside about New Orleans is that it's not really central for any West team outside of UL. They can play a tournament in Arlington or Little Rock every now and then to give the other Western Schools a chance to send fans.

RE: Future of the Basketball Tournament - EigenEagle - 02-21-2018 12:13 PM

It needs to be located in the cities of our member schools. The idea of having it in a "neutral" city is dumb. We're not the ACC or Big Ten.

No...GSUArena.

When was the last time we had a crowd of over 3K at the conference basketball tournament?

RE: Future of the Basketball Tournament - SkullyMaroo - 02-21-2018 12:15 PM

I went to the tournaments 2001-2008. Me not going to the conference tournament since corresponds to my “just out of college poor years” and the fact that we are currently God-awful. 2008 was in Mobile so that was easy. Hell, I still feel poor. Lol

RE: Future of the Basketball Tournament - Usajags - 02-21-2018 12:37 PM

I say they just go back to rotating it to each schools home courts. Hell, put it at the school that won the conference, regular season or tourney, the previous year. But not the same year, that way people know well in advance where it will be to make plans.

We really don't have the conference fan bases to support neutral site games.

New Orleans is almost as close for USA as it is for UL. But I don't disagree with you about rotating sites, at least from east to west. Birmingham wouldn't be a bad location, either, if we just alternated two sites.

In basketball we are in the Eastern Division though. And not many USA fans have gone because in the time the tournament has been in Nola our records have been

11-20
12-21
14-19
14-18

The women’s has been
8-20
5-24
15-15
11-20

And sadly both men’s and women’s records above are including non-division I wins as well or they’d be even worse. USA fans aren’t traveling to see that. We didn’t even know we we get in the tournament in some years.
