St Pete bowl - BullsFanInTX - 02-11-2018 08:28 PM

FYI, here is a nugget to keep in the back of your brain. The Tampa Bay Rays baseball team finally announced a move to the city of Tampa in a new stadium to be built in Ybor City, a stone's throw from downtown Tampa. Right off Adamo Drive near what used to be called the Crosstown expressway as you're coming into downtown Tampa from the East. I used to drive this route every day for 5 years to work. At any rate, what that would mean is the St Pete bowl would be on the move to Tampa in a new stadium, if the bowl follows the Rays. They still have to work out financing and a stadium design, but the potential plan is to open the new stadium in 2022 or 23.

Rays Announce New Proposed Stadium Site in Tampa

The Rays have officially announced plans to move the team's home ballpark to Tampa.

At a press conference Friday, Rays owner Stuart Sternberg said the team intends to move to a site in Ybor City, a neighborhood in Tampa.

"Ybor City is authentically Tampa Bay," Sternberg said, according to The Tampa Bay Times. "This is where we want to be playing."

The team currently plays at Tropicana Field, which is across the Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg.

Ybor City is located within Tampa's Hillsborough County. The Rays will focus on narrowing down the new stadium's exact location across a 14-acre site.

Kinda doubt it...baseball and football don't work well together.

Still not a done deal... lot's of politics to play out

Stu increasing his number from $150m to $250m makes me a little more optimistic. still gonna need some corporate sponsors to step up.

I seriously doubt any new stadium for football or baseball ever goes dual duty again. I don't see why would build a new baseball stadium and design it to accommodate college football at the expense of a MLB team playing there.

It will get done in 2018. The Rays only have a limited window (until early 2019, I believe), that allows them to negotiate a deal with Tampa.

If the deal falls through are the Rays gonna be a lame duck until 2028 or will St. Pete attempt to extort a buy out ?

EDIT: Here is their most preferred specific location in Ybor City:

Lots of issues there, though. A pretty penny is going to have to be thrown at the people who own the warehouses and such to get them to sell, move, etc...

Hell, well over market value and season tickets for life before it is even a discussion. The owners can hold out to a degree but do they really want to be the ones that prevent the Rays from staying ? Do they really want to be the ones who force eminent domain upon them ?

The fact that there are businesses here complicates things. If it was section 8 housing then it wouldn't be such a big deal. That is how the land was procured for the new Magic arena.

Also - where the hell are people supposed to park ?

RE: St Pete bowl - BearcatJerry - 02-12-2018 06:44 AM

The last time a Rays specific stadium was being floated out there (the one somewhere near the water with the 'sail-like' canopy), the general plan was to demo the Sun-Dome/aka "Trop" and build a 20k pro-Soccer stadium on the site. I remember some discussion that USF could also consider the site for a FB stadium because it wasn't far from their St. Petersburg campus...

The question for the Bowl Game is what happens to the game if the stadium isn't there?

RE: St Pete bowl - TexanMark - 02-12-2018 08:10 AM

If St Pete builds a 20-25k seat Soccer Stadium I could see a pre Christmas bowl thriving there. Time will tell. Another idea is to entice a MLB team there to Spring Train and set up a minor league team. Could a FB/Soccer/Lacrosse stadium fit with a spring training complex?

RE: St Pete bowl - firmbizzle - 02-12-2018 08:27 AM

It's not going to happen. Rays are moving to Montreal. This is just more posturing to delay their lame duck status until their buyout of Tropicana reduces, sometime around 2022-2024. These stories happen every year.

Bad Boys Mowers Gasparilla St. Petersburg Bowl champions Temple Owls! (the commemorative t-shirt has very small lettering)

I was under the impression that deals had ALREADY been made to acquire the 14 acres. At least that is what my impression of what I read is.

Would a new baseball stadium affect the construction of an ocs for USF?

This does not effect the fun parts of Ybor, right? Except possibly the Centro garage getting full on game days.

Nope...it should help bring a few decent sports bars though.

It will be interesting what happens to the St Pete Bowl if this becomes reality. Actually a 3rd tier bowl in either Ybor or St. Pete would work. I can't image the Trop survives though.

Trop goes down as the last rays moving van leaves the parking lot. rays are on the hook for the demolition fee too

Why would you say that. The stadium wasn't even built for the Rays. It was built to entice the Chicago White Sox to move south when they were negotiating for a new park in Chicago.
