OT: The official Olympics thread - geosnooker2000 - 02-09-2018 09:30 PM

OMG!!! Is it my imagination, or is there not a SOUL in the stands tonight at the opening ceremonies??? Was there some security threat I an not aware of that caused them to close the stadium to spectators, or is there just no one in South Korea who is interested in the Olympics?

They have things they are holding up for the colors and projections. The lowest seats are for athletes as well.

RE: OT: The official Olympics thread - geosnooker2000 - 02-09-2018 09:39 PM

Wow! Did they just cut out to commercial break right before Russia on purpose?

RE: OT: The official Olympics thread - geosnooker2000 - 02-09-2018 09:40 PM

Oh, never mind. Looks like they are just pausing the tape for commercials.

I didn't even know there was an Olympics going on until I saw this thread.

And yes, you probably guessed correctly, I don't own a TV. I refuse to allow one of those eyeless instruments in my house when a computer will more than suffice while cutting through the "programming".

Well it's easy to see how you would not know the Olympics are going on, being as you don't have a TV.

So, what's the deal with Hong Kong having their own flag in their own athletes?

RE: OT: The official Olympics thread - TheOrigamiJimmyChin - 02-09-2018 10:42 PM

UH represented on the history-making Nigerian Women's Bobsled team.

Two governments, one country.

Hey what's the deal with Puerto Rico having their own flag and athletes??!! We should consider an invasion.

I dig how Korea and the other asian countries that have hosted the games, get much more creative artistically with the entertainment, and don't just show a rock concert like most of the western countries do. They did a nice job of combining hi-tech with elements of their ancient culture. Pretty dang cool.

Absolutely agree. That was a cool Opening Ceremony

Just don't tell Cartman. He still thinks the red Chinese are planning on taking over Colorado via PF Changs.

I thought the same thing. I went back and took a look. They are using LED light displays on poles above head height behind each seat. I think it's a bad look because it makes it impossible to see anyone sitting down. When they played the Korean anthem everyone stood up and you could see the stadium looked full. The lower 2000 seats were left empty for the athletes.

Either that or the rumor that the commies were coming over the border had everyone getting the heck out of town.

That's nothing new. Like Puerto Rico and numerous places such as the Virgin Islands, subnational regions compete in the Olympics.

And Hong Kong is its own political entity for another 30 years at least.

Macau too.

I heard an announcer state that they could not see some of the effects live due to "augmented reality" viewable only on TV. Amazing.

The Chinese Opening Ceremony was the best I've seen. It was massive in scale and extremely well choreograph. I figure they wanted to flex muscles and make a statement about the "new" China. It worked with me.

Shaun White just went nutso!

And I guarantee you if that had been the Third Run, he would have gotten a 99 or something like that.
