Refreshing honesty no?

They did the same thing during W.'s administration. They forced the Democratic House to show restraint when Reagan was president. They forced Clinton to show restraint. But W. didn't keep a tight leash on them, they thought they had a "permanent" majority and they spent like drunken Democrats.

That part is all on the Democrats. W. wanted to do another fix of social security like Reagan did in the 80s. The Democrats refused and tried to use it for political gain. Obama denied there was a problem. Democrats are SS change deniers.

Do we cut SS now? That’s the part the gates me. People vote to cut their own throats. I could see raising the age.

Solution is easy:

1) Make the SS tax 15% (7.5%/7.5%) and remove the income cap
2) Increase the full eligibility age one month per year for the next 48 years, until it hits 70
3) Do like Sweden and add a super 401k privatized portion of 5% (2.5%/2.5%); this goes a long way toward wealth equality by giving those at the bottom an equity stake in the future
4) Slow down inflationary growth at the to end

These moves would hurt me personally now, but are good in the long run.

Of course, I'm proposing this in the context of my other proposals to implement Bismarck health care funded by a consumption tax, which would also fund a guaranteed minimum income and a balanced budget, and would permit the individual income tax to be reduced sharply or eliminated altogether.

Still haven't heard any solutions from anyone on the left.

I'm emulating the worst posters on here because..... why?????? It really doesn't make sense. I'm mad that you guys are hypocrits. I've listened for 8 years how Obama is the devil because of the spending. Look at this look at that. Trump gets in office passes a tax cut that costs 1.5 trillion and this spending package is a trillion. It makes me see red...................
As long as you acknowledge that on the same basis as you get the $1.5 trillion and $1 trillion numbers, Obama is responsible for $9.5 trillion, we are on the same page.
I said above what it will take to balance the budget. That’s still what it takes, several posts later. Still waiting for someone to come up with an alternative.

Bump. Still waiting.

Are we just going to have one circle jerk after another of each side blaming the other, or is somebody going to come up with a solution?

Something such as you propose really is the only way to balance the budget. Too bad those in power in Washington WILL NEVER MOVE TO IMPLEMENT IT.

The power they hold derives from being able to pick winners and losers using the existing tax code structure. They can give relief to those that grease their campaign coffers and gore the ox of those on the other side of things.

So long as they are able to parlay a $175K job into being millionaires- nothing will be done to fix any of this........

RE: Budget blow out deal done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - Old Dominion - 02-10-2018 10:37 AM

Nail on head. Term limits and campaign finance reform. Beginnings to a solution.

Another SS change denier.

Simple fact is that people are getting more out than was put in and there are fewer workers to support the pyramid scheme.

Politicians have been taking the money for years and giving back IOUs to fund deficits. Now the IOUs are coming due, but they still aren't enough to pay benefits.

1)a) is NOT necessary. We need to raise it to fund Medicare. We don't need it to fund social security. Now we should take off the cap.
2) is necessary.
3) while I agree makes sense, its just not going to happen. Especially with the stock market crash of 2008 still fresh in people's memories. If W. couldn't get it done before that crash, its not going to happen now.
4) We have pegged inflation adjustments higher than the increase in the COL for decades. We need to make those adjustments based, not just on CPI, but on the adjusted CPI (adjusts for people's substitution behavior-when product A goes up, they buy product B).

This should be enough to balance it, or at least make it close enough that further changes aren't needed until after we get Medicare under control.

Congress doesn't seem to want to deal with things until there is a crisis. Its a function of too many professional politicians and too many lawyers. Its the way lawyers operate-pushing things until the last second.

RE: Budget blow out deal done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - Machiavelli - 02-10-2018 03:38 PM

When your drinking poisoned water tell me and choking down polluted air those pesky govt regulations will seem well worthwhile.

The Flint deal comes to mind. Righties like to blame the EPA but the fact if the matter is the Republican Governor wanted to squeeze Detroit and made Flunt switch their water supply. The water was fine to drink from the Flint river but was caustic and caused lead to leech from homes with lead pipes. Would not have happened if they kept Detroit water which the Republican governor made them switch.
