UAB - bigblue78 - 02-02-2018 02:14 PM

Saturday 7:00 at the Ted: UAB (15-8, 6-4 CUSA).

Results to date: Jacksonville (96-67); Chattanooga (89-47); Lemoyne-Owen College (81-57); Richmond (50-63); Buffalo (91-96 OT); Iowa (85-95); Mississippi College (90-53); Memphis (71-56); Troy (90-78); Auburn (80-85); Alabama A&M (90-58); New Orleans (74-67); Miss Valley St (74-57); MTSU (60-63); FAU (75-44); FIU (75-64); S Mississippi (86-75); La Tech (74-62); WKU (69-77); Marshall (78-86); UTEP (85-78); UTSA (70-82); Charlotte (76-64).

Last game: UAB woke up in the second half after lackluster perimeter defense resulted in a 40-40 tie at HT. UAB adjusted their D at HT to prevent transition 3s (UNCC 6-11 1st half, 3-18 2nd) and went to Senior forward Chris Cokely (10-12 FG, 12 RB) to dominate late. Lee and Lavender had 11 pts each and Lewis Sulivan had 10.

CUSA stats: 74.8 pts (vs 69.5); .497 FG (.335 3s); .664 FT; +4.8 RB; A/TO= 1.48

Starters (CUSA stats)
F William Lee (6-9 205 Sr). 26.0 min.; .519 FG (8-25 3s); .692 FT; 6.6 RB; 2.1 blocks; 9.7 pts
F Chris Cokely (6-8 240 Sr). 30.0 min.; .606 FG; .795 FT; 9.4 RB; 20.1 pts

G Nate Darling (6-5 190 So). 28.8 min.; .513 FG (23-52 3s); .750 FT; 3.3 RB; 2.3 assists; 10.8 pts
G Zack Bryant (6-2 180 Fr). 31.9 min.; .476 FG (5-22 3s); .588 FT; 3.1 RB; 3.4 assists; 12.3 pts
G Nick Norton (5-10 165 Jr). 31.7 min.; .359 FG (15-44 3s); .750 FT; 2.7 RB; 5.2 assists; 7.0 pts

Bench
G Deion Lavender (6-4 190 Jr). 9.3 min.; .625 FG; .429 FT; 1.9 RB; 3.3 pts
F Lewis Sullivan (6-7 225 Jr). 17.7 min.; .500 FG; .526 FT; 3.4 RB; 5.7 pts
G Jalen Perry (6-3 195 Jr). 21.0 min.; .377 FG (8-26 3s); .571 FT; 3.6 RB; 5.6 pts
F Makhtar Gueye (6-10 185 Fr). 7.5 min.; .385 FG; 1.00 FT; 1.2 RB; 1.3 pts

UAB is an enigma. A veteran team with a lot of talent that has failed to get a signature win while suffering a couple of embarrassing losses. Cokely playing at all-CUSA level (#1 FG%, # 5 pt/g and RBs in CUSA games). William Lee a dangerous stretch-4 that is #2 in blocks in CUSA games.

UAB is #1 FG% and RB margin, #2 scoring margin, FG% defense and assists/g, #3 A/TO and #4 3-pt% in CUSA games.

RE: UAB - cmett003 - 02-02-2018 02:52 PM

Need this game for my sanity

RE: UAB - 757ODU - 02-02-2018 02:59 PM

They will bounce back and win this game.

RE: UAB - Gilesfan - 02-02-2018 02:59 PM

So Cokley doesn't shoot 3s....that is a positive for our defense down low!

Having said that, he's by far the best player in the conference. William Lee is decent. Everyone else is pretty meh. They don't have a guy named Johnson on their team, so which guy is going to have a career day shooting the rock? Perry?

RE: UAB - ODU2011 - 02-02-2018 06:02 PM

Don’t think anyone is hyping this one up, so we should be able to win this. Don’t know why this team or JJ fold under the pressure of big games

RE: UAB - odu09 - 02-02-2018 08:48 PM

The best thing to hope for at this point is a top 4 seed. Winning will go a long way to help secure it

RE: UAB - ODUDJ96 - 02-02-2018 10:47 PM

We need Porter to regain his form and stay out of foul trouble. Lee and Cokley vs Porter and Stith/Carver are going to be the key. I’m guessing we’re going to see a heavy dose of zone from UAB after Middle’s success. Going to need BJ, Haynes, and Caver to be on - or at least two of the three.

UAB - Monarchblue - 02-02-2018 11:08 PM

We win this one, possibly easily.

More important - is today Big Blue’s Birthday celebration ? Are the doing the same thing as previous years with pre game party for kids and mascots etc. I saw something where OFU was selling a party pack this year and wondered if they are now trying to capitalize o. What used to be a fun pregame for the kids and free.

We haven't lost back to back this season I believe. That holds true today.

RE: UAB - Memphis Blazer - 02-03-2018 07:37 AM

Any of you old timers remember this game. I wrote up an account of it (somewhat Blazer biased) a couple of dates ago. Those were some prertty intense Sun Belt games.

Quote:January 30

The Blazers are 7-5 in games played on January 30.

1986 - Most exciting game on this date has to be in 1986 when UAB traveled to Old Dominion and an assistant coach was almost arrested. For the second game in five days, tempers flared and the game had to be stopped. It was bad in Bowling Green on January 25 when candy bars were thrown at UAB players. It was worst in this game at Old Dominion when the Norfolk police were called onto the court. This game was televised nationally on ESPN, to the later chagrined of Sun Belt Officials.

UAB led most of the game and the Old Dominion crowd was becoming increasingly upset at perceived bad calls. The ODU coach, Tom Young incited them further by demonstratively complaining to the referees. Midway thru the second half, a charging foul against ODU caused a melee to erupt. The ODU coach ran onto the court protesting the call. Monarch fans began showering the court with plastic megaphones and toilet tissue. Tom Young and Gene Bartow got into a shouting match at midcourt while some UAB fans were hit by the megaphones. UAB reserve Bruce Baker went behind the bench when he said he saw a fan approaching Bartow in a threatening manner. Fans came out of the stands after him and a shoving match ensued. It was reported that a few UAB players went into the stands after some fans who had thrown things.

A few police officers rushed onto the court and went straight to the UAB bench as if that was where the problems started. As order was trying to be restored, assistant UAB coach John Prince got into it, and the officer was threatening to have Prince arrested. At some point, Bartow pulled his team to the locker room where they remained for 20 minutes. As they left the court they were showered with ice and drinks. The ODU AD took the microphone and warned that the game would be forfeited if fans continued to throw things at the players.

Finally order was restored, UAB returned to the court and proceeded to go on a 7-2 run, winning the game 71-58. After the game, blame continued to be thrown in all directions. The police decided not to press charges against Prince provided he didn't file a complaint against the police officer. The ODU athletic director put the blame for it all squarely on UAB. He claimed that Tom Young was going to the mic to restore order when a shoving match initiated by Bartow prevented it. Tom Young said "Everyone saw what happened. We didn't have anyone in the stands and we didn't have anyone fighting the cops." Bartow blamed the ODU administration, saying he can't understand why a school would put their most hostile fans behind the visitors bench and not control them.

The result of the is chaos and the preceding Western Kentucky game was that Sun Belt Commissioner Vic Bubas instituted new rules, putting more security by the visitors bench and not allowing fans to sit directly behind the bench. Cheerleaders and mascots were warned about taunting officials and opposing players, and all handouts and giveaways would be provided after the game, and not before.

It was the very first ODU game that I ever attended. I had just moved to Norfolk, and was invited by a thoughtful co-worker. I've been hooked ever since.

According to an email I received yesterday, all kids do get free ice cream and cake. I think the birthday party pack thing might be something different.

I was there. I’ll never forget seeing so many soda cups coming down from the upper areas of Scope. It was Tom Young who got in the PA demanding that no one throw anything on the court. Paul Webb went into UAB’s locker room and “brokered” an end to the hostilities. Never seen anything like that before or since.

RE: UAB - mac - 02-03-2018 08:22 AM

I was in the middle of it so I remember! You had a rather tall left handed assistant coach who had a writing pen in his hand about to use it as a weapon. At that point I decided it was best to head back to my end zone seat ! It was a great game, one you don't forget!

RE: UAB - mac - 02-03-2018 08:27 AM

Today's game = MUST WIN for the Monarchs. We lose this and my friend Razor will be leading the charge for change like we haven't seen yet.

Big game today!

Pre-dates me - but let’s get this rivalry going again! I’m expecting a very tough game. You guys have underperformed - but your team is extremely talented. Lee is exceptional.

This is a HUGE game. I know Thurs was disappointing, but I hope the fans show up again. The fan turnout for the Marshall game after WKU was disappointing (esp for a Sat night).
