Watkins is an intriguing player. Looks like the "extra motivation" wasn't hyperbole.

WATKINS TO WALK-ON

Massaponax senior Trey Watkins will join William & Mary’s football program as a preferred walk-on. Watkins had Division II scholarship offers but Panthers coach Eric Ludden said William & Mary is his dream school.

Watkins played running back, safety and linebacker for the Panthers. He said the Tribe’s coaches haven’t decided if he’s a running back or an outside linebacker. He won’t be in the secondary.

Ludden said William & Mary is treating Watkins as a scholarship player.

“He has an official visit. They’re paying for all of that,” Ludden said. “They’re saying he’s going to get the same chance that all the other incoming freshmen will get and it’s the school he really wanted to go to.”

Ludden said Watkins’ versatility may have ultimately hurt him with Division I coaches because they weren’t sure what position he’ll play.

Watkins said entering the Tribe’s program as a walk-on will provide extra motivation.

The four LBs who came in last year are an impressive group. Jarret Heckert worked with the travel team all season, and Riley Fox and Davis Call are both promising.

I eagerly await the 7 LB defense that Andrews dreams up for next season.

Funny. But I will say that depth at any and all positions is welcome. Our defense last year was very good but would have been considered great if not for the late scores in before half and toward end of game. Just minimal rotation would help that.

Absolutely. Putting aside injuries, which are impossible to plan for, having a full complement of players to rotate through would be excellent.

The POY’s are self explanatory.

What is the difference between the bottom three?

Shearin Leadership
Gantt Inspiration
Presidents Award

Bob Shearin (long time color commentator for Tribe football and former SID) award honors exceptional leadership.

Pat Gantt was the former Tribe manager who was paralyzed in a fall after the 2006 victory over UVA. Confined to a wheel chair the remainder of his life, he remained an integral part of the Tribe family inspiring all of us until his death a few years ago. P.G.'s award is given to a player who exemplifies overcoming adversity.

The President's Award is given to a Senior who exemplifies the commitment to Tribe football embodied by the QB Club.

Thank you. The players recognized this year fit the criteria really well.

Good friend pointed out my waning mental abilities. Pat Gantt's accident was after the 1986 Tribe win over UVA.

The 2009 game at UVA was an emotional volcano with Michael Clemons delivering a stirring pre-game pep talk. He was part of the 1986 team. After the Tribe prevailed that night, everyone expected Michael to be presented with the game ball in the locker room. But Jimmye Laycock held the ball up and called forward another member of the '86 Tribe. The locker room exploded with chants of "P.G.!!!....P.G.!!!"

That was fun. Thanks. Also impressive how the kicker kept his head and made key kicks after missing a few Early.
