I'm wondering if the interest was pre Van Vliet, or the interest is independent.

I like that there seems to be mutual interest.
They just started following each other today.

Reading up on the delayed enrollment rule, it looks confirmed that Van Vliet will only have one year of eligibility left, period. No waiver option.

I have no idea about the competition level, but his guard skills and ridiculous length are going to cause major issues in the CAA. Add to that a couple of years of Big 10 play along with high level International play... Very nice addition.

Aleks Abrams is a grad transfer with a year if eligibility left.

https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/aleks-abrams-1.html

Found the following on fansmanship
(http://www.fansmanship.com/cal-poly-basketball-in-review-aleks-abrams/)

“After redshirting his first year on campus, Abrams showed he wasn’t afraid to push in the post defensively. While it wasn’t for lack of effort, Abrams, who is listed at 6’8″, wasn’t the longest big man in the world. His offensive game only developed incrementally over the past two seasons, and his effectiveness was matchup-dependent. He had 11 points and 11 rebounds off the bench in an overtime loss at home against UC Davis this past season and a four point, 18 rebound effort in Cal Poly’s final win of the season, a 90-86 double overtime victory over CSUN.
In a conference that has gotten bigger across the board, Abrams was a somewhat undersized center.
Abrams never put up huge numbers consistently, but he had some sneaky-good defensive and rebounding games in his career and hustled and got his work done in class over four seasons at Cal Poly.”

And Austin got the quick follow-back. Abrams is also connected with coaches at Miami (OH), Maine, Radford, Milwaukee, Seattle, La Salle, and Charlotte.

I was so busy getting this post together that I missed the Van Vliet news! With Van Vliet in the fold but sitting next year the Tribe now pivots to an immediately eligible big man.

Abrams has really good footwork downlow.
His 6'8 teammate, Josh Martin, recently left CP. Where did he end up? And their G, Jared Rice, is also out of there.

Question for the boards: who was the last 7 footer we had?

I count three full seasons:

It's a shame we only get 1 playing year with him. His skill set is what I hoped for with a still-growing Drew Peterson. A 6'10+ big with guard skills.

He is a great fit, and the prospect of Nate and him giving us five deadly 3 pt shooters on the court at all times is heady territory for any college team, no matter what level. I, also, think the matchup option of he and Nate being on the floor together is a monster.

Many Wisconsin fans during the season thought their coach was too rigid about physicality/defense and needed to be more adaptive regarding what Van Vliet brought to the table with his offense. Legit 7 footer.

I truly hope Nate is still around for his senior year, and doesn't come out to the draft early, because barring injury we will be hands down a scary team with the chance at a historic season. Yes, I am gulping the koolaid!!!

Van Vliet could be insurance in case Knight goes to the draft.

Stinks that Vliet only gets 1 season. But, better than 0 seasons!

RE: 2018 CAA MBB Transfers - WMTRIBE75 - 04-16-2018 03:10 PM

So by my count we currently sit with 11 scholarship players on next year's roster, allocated as follows:

Redshirt Senior: 1

Juniors and Redshirt Juniors: 4 ( but only 3 eligible to play next year)

Sophomores: 2

Freshmen: 4

Under the current configuration, both of our big men on the 2019-20 roster(Nate and Andy) will graduate at the end of the 2019-20 season.

In a perfect world I would think that we would still try to add 2 more bigs to next year's roster; a graduate transfer with one year eligibility remaining who can give us quality minutes next season and basically be in the same "graduating " class as Paul (giving us two available scholarships for the 2019-20 incoming class), and a freshman big man that could grow into the position by being the understudy(third big man) both this year and next. We could then maybe afford to even redshirt the freshman big man next year.

Agree. If we're sending a plane out to California, just as well bring two back in Abrams and Harvey. Then love to see us steal Bertram and another big for the two remaining slots in the 2019 class.

Well, that was short lived. Abrams committed to Miami (OH).

Perhaps Van Vliet triggered that commit. Oh well, on to the next.

WM probably just got involved a little too late; Shaver got the follow back but I noticed a lot of Miami (OH) accounts in his recent follow activity.

With both parents being Kent State grads, he likely has a ton of relatives in Ohio.
