Towson round 2 - 82hawk - 01-19-2018 06:05 AM

I am optimistic about the changes the coaches have made on defense(pressing and playing more zone) and feel like those changes are exactly what we need to compete with Towson.

Towson is on a tear, and completely dismantled William and Mary recently and Drexel last night. And unlike Towson teams in the past, this team can score, having put up 90+ points in 3 of their 4 conference wins. They also can light it up from 3, which is a huge problem since they are big and can score in the paint.

I expect UNCW to utilize the press more and more as we move forward. Several times against CofC, the Hawks created turnovers or forced the Cougars to set up their offense with about 18 seconds on the shot clock. That would be a good strategy against the Tigers.

Unfortunately, the Tigers don't have many weaknesses. They score, defend and rebound well and are near the top of the conference in almost every statistical category. However, they are last in the conference in Assist/TO ratio and they don't take a lot of three pointers despite the fact they are 4th on the CAA in 3pt fg%. Those two deficiencies make them susceptible to the press and zone defense. The press and zone also can help keep Cacok and Talley out of foul trouble and on the court.

This is a game where UNCW needs to play a short bench. Talley, Cacok, Fornes and Taylor will need to log 30 min. + if we are to pull the upset. The energy of Trask should propel them.

Not sure why, but I think we win this one. Mostly because we can match up with Towson on the boards, but also because I think the coaches have put together a defensive strategy that will pay off against this team.

UNCW 78 Tiggers 74

We are so close to winning a big game. I agree, I think we win this one!

Going to reiterate the statement that was made for the CofC game. A win would be wonderful, but if they compete and make a game of it, I will be impressed.

Seahawks Entertain Tigers In Rematch

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Two of the Colonial Athletic Association's most prolific offenses square off again Saturday night when UNCW entertains well-balanced Towson as the league schedule reaches the third weekend of January.

The Seahawks, 5-14 and 2-5 in the CAA, are coming off a narrow 80-76 loss at Charleston on Thursday in a game that saw Coach C.B. McGrath's club throw a scare into the CAA's preseason favorites after trailing by 20 points late in the first half.

UNCW has lost four of its last five games, but the last three outings have been decided by a total of 10 points. Saturday's clash with Pat Skerry's club marks the opener in a three-game homestand at Trask Coliseum, where the Seahawks stand 4-3 and lead the CAA in attendance once again this season.

The Tigers carry a 14-6 overall mark and 4-3 league ledger into the 7 p.m. tip-off at Trask Coliseum. Towson's explosive offense has rolled up 99 and 90 points in its last two outings, routing William & Mary on the road and blasting Drexel at home. The Tigers rank fourth in the CAA in scoring offense (76.9), while the Seahawks are second (79.9) behind frontrunner William & Mary (85.4).

UNCW and Towson are meeting for the 38th time and the 16th time at Trask Coliseum. The Seahawks own a 22-15 advantage in the series, including a lopsided 13-2 advantage in Wilmington.

In the first matchup of the season between the two teams on Jan. 5, the Tigers placed six men in double figures and shot 54 percent to blitz the Seahawks, 89-71, in the CAA road debut for the Seahawks at SECU Arena. Senior guard Mike Morsell of Towson led all players with 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting. Seahawk senior guard Jordon Talley became the 24th player in UNCW history score 1,000 points when he drained a three-pointer from the right corner with 8:11 remaining in the first half. Junior forward Devontae Cacok and redshirt sophomore guard Ty Taylor scored 15 points to pace UNCW.

The Seahawks hold down eighth place in the 10-team circuit. Only one game separates the top seven clubs and the Tigers are in the mix, sitting in a three-way tie with Charleston and Elon for second place at 4-3. William & Mary, Hofstra and Northeastern each own a 5-2 mark.

The Seahawks are wrapping up a week of CAA opponents in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 poll. Charleston is ranked 15th in this week's poll, while Towson checks in at No. 17.

In a scheduling quirk, following Saturday's tilt, the Seahawks will have completed series with two teams - Delaware and Towson - before playing one game vs. William & Mary, Hofstra and James Madison.

The Seahawks remain at home to take on JMU (Thursday, Feb. 25) and W&M (Saturday, Feb. 27) at Trask Coliseum. Overall, the Seahawks have 11 games remaining in the regular season - six at home and five on the road.

We are 8 point dogs. No over/under yet.

I think that the gamblers will be all in on this one and that line will move to 6 before the tip. Tigers are good this year, but this is Trask and UNCW does have some talent. Devonte can't get 2 fouls early though you would think. There's a lot of ifs in this one. Hawks need for Ty and Jalen to do their thing in this one. Cacok and Talley will get theirs. If the freshmen come to play and if Marcus can deliver some, the Hawks should keep this pretty close. If...

I'd say Towson covers. they just are not a good matchup for us. Even if we keep it close, free throws at the end could make up an 8 point spread.

The line is now 6 with the over/under at 155.

The free throws could work against Towson too. Remember, they're an aggressive defensive team; some people say excessively so. If the referees call this one tight, it could work against them.

It's a Saturday night crew, so we're getting the bottom of the barrel refs while the ACC get the "best" of the crew. So who knows what to expect....

Fair point. But my point was I expect Towson to have the lead, thus even in a close game they would be getting fouled. Stranger things have happened, Hopefully, we show up tonight!

RE: Towson round 2 - billthebighawksfan - 01-20-2018 07:15 PM

Refs suck!!!!!!

RE: Towson round 2 - Seahawk2010 - 01-20-2018 07:18 PM

Yep, typical Saturday CAA refs. Horrible.

RE: Towson round 2 - billthebighawksfan - 01-20-2018 07:18 PM

Two of the cheapest touch fouls ever and Cacok sits for 18 minutes. If I'm the coach, I put him back in the game at some point.

RE: Towson round 2 - billthebighawksfan - 01-20-2018 07:25 PM

UNCW shooting terrible. Give the ball to Taylor.

RE: Towson round 2 - billthebighawksfan - 01-20-2018 07:28 PM

All ball, refs suck.

RE: Towson round 2 - 82hawk - 01-20-2018 07:32 PM

Straight man to man IS NOT WORKING.. We need to shake it up with some press and more zone.

RE: Towson round 2 - 82hawk - 01-20-2018 07:38 PM

I like the energy and aggressiveness Brown brings to the floor.

RE: Towson round 2 - billthebighawksfan - 01-20-2018 07:41 PM

Hawks just aren't making shots tonight and Towson is. Plus they are outrebounding us.

RE: Towson round 2 - billthebighawksfan - 01-20-2018 07:41 PM

I like Brown too tonight.

RE: Towson round 2 - 82hawk - 01-20-2018 07:45 PM

This is a tie game if we can hit anything from three.
