Casey Tucker to Rice? - Converted Rice - 01-08-2018 09:11 PM

Casey Tucker Grad transfer from Stanford. Two to play. Wonder if he would follow his old OC to Rice?

Where did you see he was going to transfer?

I see a tweet from Longhorn recruiting that says 'Stanford OL Casey Tucker is working on a date to visit Texas. Keep an eye on Rice OL Calvin Anderson. '

They were talking about him on the Baylor board.

Texas fans think they're getting both Tucker and our own Calvin Anderson...

Kinda surprising going to Texas. They can recruit the top players in Texas and still need transfers?

offensive line was a problem for them this season

Charlie Strong didn't recruit as well as he should have, with one result being that their OL is not up to their usual standard. Mensa had problems with it all year.

Also a big difference between a 22yo lineman and a 18yo freshman.

Meh.. that's a recruiting issue less an age issue.

I'd agree for skill positions, but not on the OL. That's 4 extra years of conditioning and training table food, and I think that will make a big difference.

This reminds me of a point Fred made several times about admission standards at Rice. Fred favored some loosening, primarily of process rather than standards, and his era probably encompassed the optimum tradeoff between academic and athletic needs. But he recognized that lowering standards to the level of the late 1970s and early 1980s was a mistake. "The reason Rice kept losing is because they kept lining up 18 year olds to play other people's 22 year olds." The reason we had to do that is that those 18 year old admission exceptions were all flunking out before they got to be 22 year olds.

Fred also had one other good line. Talking about coming to HRS with Arkansas, he remembered, "We had a time out, and the Rice students started their, 'No big words,' chant. I looked around the huddle and thought, 'They got that right.'"

I think I heard that tu hasn't had an offensive lineman drafted since 2008. This is a Mack and Charlie recruiting and development issue.....

It was noted that Calvin put on 60 pounds since arriving at Rice. If he was still ~ 240 pounds, UT would not be interested in his "transfer".

......although the TU starting OT didn't play in the bowl game this season in lieu of the upcoming draft.

Charlie had to run off a bunch of bad actors when he arrived in Austin, and seems like some linemen were part of the house cleaning. He lost some to injuries/transfers as well, and IIRC his lines were very young during his tenure.
