Toledo’s Undefeated Seasons - Toledo_Storm - 01-04-2018 08:04 PM

With UCF claiming their Undefeated National Championship. I think UT needs to finally hang the banners in the Glass Bowl for 1969 - 1971 and claim our National Titles.

Couldn’t agree more.

UCF is the only unbeaten FBS team this season. Just curious: were any of the great unbeaten UT teams the only unbeaten teams those years? If so, then I love the idea (although it would lose quite a bit of it's thunder after copying it from UCF) of putting up some banners proclaiming UT as mythical national champs for one or more of those seasons...as the years go by, I find that fewer & fewer Toledoans even know about the 35-0 record.

True. However, we have more of a claim because we did it 3 years in a row.

Also, having them up will never allow us to forget our history. That is a huge achievement and should be addressed more. Whether that be having fun and claiming the National Championships w/ banners or just making it more prevalent in the stadium.

We beat who? Villinova? Great legacy but any SEROUS talk about this would lead more to "get real" response. UCF showed clearly they could play with any of the four play-off teams and could probably on a given day, beat any of the four play-off teams. Their snark is a lot more legit than would be any from us or even from recent WMU or NIU.

This is a sleeping dog best let to lie, concentrate on the HOF for Ealey. That's legit in this day and age and in hindsight.

A little late and, given our schedule- no Auburns for example, our claim is weak. The Carpenter-led Miami teams that followed us probably had more of a claim, knocking off some big names in the Tangerine Bowl.

This was ment to be all good and fun. SB Nation did mention UT in teams who should follow in UCF's footsteps.

Auburn declared themselves National Champions in 2004.

We should hang banners. Since the BCS, the NCAA does not even sanction or recognize the national champ for FBS. See the asterics and fine print. They recognize it is not a fair system. Maybe if all the G5 claimed these championships it might be a way to stir change. If everyone claims to be champs, maybe it dilutes the Pig 5 coference's cartel!!!

National Champs 1969, 1970 and 1971!!!

I’ve grown up in Florida most of my life and here it’s all SEC and ACC. All I’ve heard is that Toledo sucks and will never mount to anything. Now in recent years after our upsets and success that has started to change here.

If the G5 kept claiming championships, we could see the G5 split from the P5. After that all hell would break loose.

I just wonder if anyone has modeled out what would happen if the G5 did "split" and then refused to play the P5 teams. It's not like the NCAA could go out and add more teams. The G5 would have to cuddle up to the D2 teams who would also have to refuse to play the P5. Let the P5 play each other week in and week out.

What would ESPN do? Attendance at the G5 games would increase for sure. No weekday games. Money would be the issue - and the reason for going that route in the first place - to have access to more of it.

There are a lot of pros and cons - and I would at least like to think conferences are looking at this, and discussing some strategies for themselves, since money is always an issue. This would get a lot more legs if they ever decide to pay players. That would create an unrecoverable rift between the haves and have-nots.

If the P5 eliminated 3 or four of the so called breather games against G5 and FCS opponents their gaudy 11-1, or 10-2 records would be a thing of the past.
They would consequently beat up on each other, with more injuries, and parity would be more in place. I think the powers that be, need the G5 more than they would like to admit.

RE: Toledo’s Undefeated Seasons - eastisbest - 01-06-2018 04:15 PM

G5 would lose its anti-trust claim, the one they used to get into a News Year's bowl game. They would lose it regards TV, advertisement and well, everything. Unlike the mid-majors in basketball, in football they would lose the ability to compete.

ESPN would still need to fill programming but they are going to fill their needs, not the G5's. Their needs are during the week. G5 would still be stuck with a take it or leave it.

Splitting from the NCAA would be putting the cart before the horse and by the time they realize it, they may have killed their programs or at the least their position. Combined I would be impressed if the entire G5 had the economic power of Texas and Ohio St alone, let alone the entire P5, but I doubt that they do. Unless the G5 can find or create a competitor for ESPN, ala BIG10/Texas/SEC network, they have no power in this decision.

The better move I think is to continue to press for more within the present system.
