If I am reading the way the winds are blowing right now regarding stadium choices, it appears that the 45,000 seat BJCC stadium will be the one built. This will fit the present needs of UAB football and those for its immediate future.
While I still support a larger convention facility (like an MPF) for the future convention needs of B'ham, that does not seem to be the choice of present metro leadership. It is my fear that the list to fill in the blank in the "We don't want to be like______!" (in the 20th century it was "Atlanta") battlecry will get longer and longer every few years as our city drops further and further down the list of vibrantly growing regional cities.

The choice was thrown away 20 years ago, with the MAPS referendum in 1998. Now it's 2 a.m. and we'd better go home with the chick with the ponytail and glasses or we're going to be left with her fat friend.
Failing to make the Amazon shortlist needs to resonate. You can argue that a city shouldn't choose to offer huge subsidies to a corporation worth more than 90 percent of the planet's sovereign states. The key word is "choose." Birmingham lacks the quality of life, public transportation and other infrastructure - the things that MAPS was designed to kickstart - to even be in the conversation. So we'll keep whoring ourselves out for "good jobs" getting our fingers chopped off making auto parts while our brightest move to Nashville to join the 21st Century. RTR! RTR! RTR![/align]

Jefferson county already pledged $30 million for the project.
The city of Birmingham’s contribution is still unknown. Council President Pro Tem Jay Roberson says he expects the mayor to make a recommendation to council in the next week or so.
There is also talk about the legislature making changes to the car rental tax bill to help generate revenue for the project.
Snider said a bill was passed years ago to allow that car rental tax to generate revenue for the project, but that it has not been implemented yet. Now that a project is ready, he says a change is needed in the bill to allow the money to begin to be collected.

It has been said that when you die in B'ham, your soul goes to Heaven or Hell through Atlanta. In Alabama, under provisions of the Constitution of 1901, all local business must go through the state legislature.
If the state legislature only had what is truly "state business" to legislate, it would have its hands full. Under the state Constitution, it is also required to micromanage every county, city, village or unincorporated hamlet. Therefore it has so much to do, it gets little actually done because too many people are pulling it in too many directions during the 90 legislative days it is in annual session.
