SEC Basketball is Underway: - JRsec - 01-02-2018 09:35 PM

Auburn picked up a big win tonight in Knoxville. That keeps their streak alive at 11. 94-84. Vanderbilt edged Alabama 76-75. Florida took A&M down tonight but the Aggies were without 3 starters 2 of which were serving a suspension. Mississippi State takes down the Hogs 78-75.

I got to go watch the game against A&M this past Saturday. It was the most fun I've had at a basketball game since I was a student. Great atmosphere and the team played lights out.

I don't know how this team will finish up, but they've got an awful lot of potential.

The SEC's preseason was strong. There were just 2 or 3 schools that had slightly substandard pre-seasons. The conference season is going to be fight every game with no gimmes.

Mizzou beat Carolina but lost by two to the Gators today. Still a massive improvement over last year.

Yeah, and a questionable foul call in the closing minute figured into the Florida win since it was in their favor.

And Auburn picks up their 2nd Conference win tonight over their 2nd ranked team: Auburn 88 Arkansas 77

my eyes are welling up right now - a basketball thread started on the SEC forum, not by me, and several responses and teams named, and the word "KENTUCKY" wasn't named once. I am proud! and proud of our conference, we've got a hell of a league this year, I legitimately see 10 teams right now good enough to be in the tournament, if even 7 make it, that will be a whale of a season

The Cats just need to gel. Still too much individual play on the offensive end. You've got size, arm length, shooters and defenders and all they need is to learn to trust one another and share.

I thought you should have won the Tennessee game, but the Vols are real streak shooters. Auburn played well enough in that game to keep them from getting on a second roll. The opened up a 17 pt lead on us in the first 7 minutes of the first half. But we closed a led at the half and frustrated them defensively the rest of the way. You guys have better gifts with which to do that than we do. It will happen. But this year the Cats may not be the regular season champ. It's going to be a fight.

Yep, it's the same story for us as every year, except the youth is even more emphasized this year, because this is a REALLY young team even for Calipari's standards. Including two injured guys that have yet to play, our top ten players going into this season were seven freshmen and three sophomores, and two of the three sophs barely ever played last year. I have learned to be very patient. The Tennessee game in my mental schedule was marked a loss when the schedule was released, the Cats hardly ever win in Knoxville, even when UT isn't as good as they are this year - it is UT's biggest rivalry game and as is Cal's go-to saying, but it's true, "Kentucky gets everyone's best shot". When I saw UT dropped the game to your Tigers earlier in the week, JR, I knew we were in trouble. Course, Texas A&M was also just upset at home by LSU, and they are our next opponent, and I have 100% full confidence that UK will see the version of TAMU that was ranked in the top five, as opposed to the one who lost to LSU. It never fails!

I have already seen great strides made in team defense, and the second half meltdown Saturday night notwithstanding, the team seems to respond well to halftime adjustments, especially given their youth. Taking nothing away from Tennessee, but I kinda throw that game aside, rivalry game, over half the team playing with the flu, our best guy in the game missed most of the 2nd half to injury, and we had loads of foul trouble. No excuses, UT deserved the win, but the TAMU game will tell us a lot about these Cats.

Excited about the depth of the league, I think your Tigers have a great shot of being ranked this week!

Gonna be a tough year for South Carolina. There's good talent on the team, but absolutely no one that is capable of playing point. Gotta fix it through recruiting.

The good news is you have one of the best coaches in the league, and a guy well capable of fixing problems when they present themselves. Love Coach Martin, and more good days than bad are ahead in Columbia, as long as he's there, imo.

Congrats to the Auburn Tigers for getting ranked today, as mentioned a few posts above, they're in today at #22. Kentucky and Tennessee are still ranked, though Texas A&M dropped all the way out from #11 - just in time for their game with UK - like clockwork 04-jawdrop

With Auburn now ranked, I believe that makes over half the league that has been ranked this year, eight of 14 (Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee, Texas A&M). And of the six that haven't been, one is being pretty overlooked in my opinion, and I believe right now is a NCAA Tourney team (Georgia), and another is a team that just went to the Final Four last year (South Carolina), and another was actually expected to be one of the four or five best teams going into this year but has been disappointing, but certainly has talent (Vanderbilt).

Things are looking up!

During A&M's losing skid, they had two starters suspended and another injured. I think the suspended players are back now. BTW the two suspended were their top scorers. So yeah, they'll be back to that ranked form shortly.

RE: SEC Basketball is Underway: - JRsec - 01-09-2018 11:30 PM

Wow what a night:

Bama outdistances South Carolina.

Kentucky eeks out a win and hands Texas A&M their 4th straight conference loss in the process.

Auburn and Tennessee overcome 10 pt halftime deficits to cruise to win. I can't say this often but Auburn is now 3-0 in the SEC and 15-1 overall and this week the were ranked for the 1st time in over 15 years.

I agree.

The problem with the program at the moment is very narrow - we just don't have a quality PG. Our PG from last season went pro and was undrafted, our backup got kicked out of school, and plans C and D have been injured. The rest of the pieces at the 3, 4, and 5 are more or less still there and all should return next season.

As for PG, Rah Felder is back in school and will return next season. Brian Bowen (former 5 star wing) enrolled at SC yesterday. Hopefully we close out the class with 1-2 more quality guards and get this thing back on track.

1/13/18

So far today Kentucky, Auburn and South Carolina pick up nice road wins, and Ole Miss wins a big one against Florida at home. Tennessee and A&M are in a tight one. And two are left to play.

RE: SEC Basketball is Underway: - AllTideUp - 01-13-2018 09:08 PM

We've got a winnable game tonight at LSU, but we haven't been great on the road so no guarantees here.

BTW, I got to watch a little bit of Dayton and VCU yesterday. Dayton is now coached by Anthony Grant and that team put up 66 points in a half. I mean, where the crap was all that offense when Grant was at Alabama? Oh well, water under the bridge...

RE: SEC Basketball is Underway: - Gamecock - 01-13-2018 10:09 PM

Big win for the Gamecocks today. Don’t expect us to make tournament this year but finishing .500 and maybe going to the NIT would help us keep some momentum.

Frank has a huge story to sell to recruits, PG is a major void but the other pieces are there

RE: SEC Basketball is Underway: - AllTideUp - 01-13-2018 10:47 PM

Badly needed win for Bama tonight.

Nice win for the Tide, LSU has proven why this year's SEC is the best in ages... they were supposed to be clearly the worst team, and had road wins at A&M and Arky back to back, after only losing to UK by 3. A road win at Baton Rouge is nothing to scoff at. Will Wade is already making big improvements.

Re: Anthony Grant, I see UD up close several times a year, and they are definitely playing differently than I remembered he did at Alabama, and differently than Dayton, typically a tough, grinder type team, plays. Believe Coach Grant brought some tips back from the NBA and the Thunder!

I am very excited by the progress of the league, so many great coaching hires that are paying off. For all the hullabaloo, as always, about the ACC and Big 12, it's the SEC (at least as of my last check), that had the most top 50 and 100 teams. With Auburn leading the way at 6! Great job, Tigers! UK is at 10, and I believe Tennessee and Florida aren't far behind. I think we have more top 100 teams than Big 12 has teams in their conference, period. Great!

Will Wade definitely has a solid team. Weird thing is that he might have cost them a shot at that ballgame tonight. I don't know if you saw the game, but that technical foul was a little foolish on his part. They had just narrowed the gap to 5. All you have to do is get a stop on defense and maybe the game shifts.

RE: SEC Basketball is Underway: - murrdcu - 01-14-2018 01:58 PM

Hogs hang on to beat Mizzou after early 15 point lead.

I was expecting another late hog collapse, but they played through it to stop the three game skid.
