WBB Game Thread (ESPN3): 2pm hosting Columbia - owl at the moon - 12-30-2017 10:48 AM

OOC Finale this afternoon at Tudor.
I’ll be streaming it on the “Trey” from out of town.

Speaking of treys, Nicole Iademarco has one in each of our 11 games this season. And we lead the league so far in 3s per game, with more than eight per.

Also, the ODU game next month will be on ESPN3

In addition, Rice's home game against Conference USA foe Old Dominion will be streamed on Jan. 28 at 2 p.m.

Rice moves up to #5 in the National mid-major rankings (and the only C-USA rep)

'ESPN-W’ Wrote:5. Rice (9-2) Promoting the Owls into the top five would be more confidently done if they had their full complement of Ogwumikes, but upheaval elsewhere in the mid-major ranks in recent days opens the door. So despite playing its past four games without Olivia Ogwumike, the team's third-leading scorer in points per game this season, Rice climbs to the fifth spot. It helps that the Owls still have Erica Ogwumike, the leading scorer this season, but Nicole Iademarco is the star of late. In the final two games before Christmas, Iademarco totaled 47 points and hit nine 3-pointers. That last part is one of the secrets of success for a team with a short rotation. Five Owls average at least one 3-pointer per game and all of them shoot at least 38 percent from beyond the arc.

Last week: No. 10

Scheduled 2pm tip is in 20 minutes. Let’s go Rice!

RE: WBB Game Thread (ESPN3): 2pm hosting Columbia - Almadenmike - 12-30-2017 03:32 PM

Suffocating defense gives Owls a 12-0 run to start 2Q.

29-18 with 5:25 left in first half.

RE: WBB Game Thread (ESPN3): 2pm hosting Columbia - Almadenmike - 12-30-2017 03:42 PM

36-25 at the half. Rice won 2Q 19-9.

First time really seeing the team. This is a good, solid core that functions well together. Not too many lost possessions or defensive assignments. I understand the short bench now, seeing the limited substitutions.

Not sure how good Columbia really is, but they do some good things, too.

Good luck to the Lady Owls the rest of the game, as I probably won't catch much.

Good half. Let’s get more of the same in the 3rd Qtr!

Done. 16-10 in the 3Q.

52-35.

First time I've watched us all year. We look good.

RE: WBB Game Thread (ESPN3): 2pm hosting Columbia - Almadenmike - 12-30-2017 04:43 PM

Final: 67-44. (15-9 in 4Q.)

4 Owls in double figures: , Erica Ogwumike (16), Knight (14), Grigsby (12) & Iademarco (10).

Ogwumike was a beast on the boards: 19!

Rice had 48 rebounds in all (16 offensive / 32 defensive) to Columbia's 26 (7/19).

Good job Lady Owls. Now the fun starts.

Our bench-- all 3 of them-- played most of the 4Q. Erica with 16 points and a season-high 19 boards despite sitting out almost the entire 4Q. Looking forward to seeing the ladies in person for the first time this year next Sunday.

And we match UH’s 23 point margin of victory over them from Thursday night!

Their RPI is 157. (Rice is 180.)

The Lions were 6-7 coming in to today's game. They've beaten Providence (170) and Boston College (134), while losing by more than 20 points to Mississippi State (3), Arizona State (36) and (on Thursday) Houston (35).

RPI is a ridiculous measure of team strength.
We dropped over twenty points in RPI after our last two wins basically because of SoS.

Massey has us just outside 100 (104ish) and IIRC Columbia just inside the top 200 (175ish). Not a huge fan of Massey either, but they do a better job of measuring actual team strength than does RPI.

RPI measures as much whether you’ve scheduled an at-Large-worthy schedule, as it does your performance. It’s literally 50% SoS.

We don’t have an at-Large worthy schedule this year. But IMO (and others, like ESPNW and some other polls) we do have the team strength to win CUSA regular season and the tournament, and to earn top 25 consideration.

RE: WBB Game Thread (ESPN3): 2pm hosting Columbia - Fort Bend Owl - 12-30-2017 05:42 PM

I'm not sure how anyone can take women's RPI's seriously when they have Rice 180 and Houston 35. Rice lost at A&M by 6, Houston lost at A&M by 18.

Or how Columbia had a better RPI coming into this game despite the difference in our records and how we destroyed them.

RE: WBB Game Thread (ESPN3): 2pm hosting Columbia - Fort Bend Owl - 12-30-2017 06:51 PM

Rice is also 1 ranking behind Little Rock, who they beat by 7 at Tudor.

But I guess the good news is the conference is okay, with 5 teams ranked ahead of Rice in the RPI. So their RPI should improve in conference play.

Upgrading the schedule next year is a necessity. May as well try to schedule 2 games vs. Houston in NC play.

RE: WBB Game Thread (ESPN3): 2pm hosting Columbia - Seventyniner - 12-31-2017 02:37 PM

RPI is only a meaningful statistic at the end of the season, and it takes nearly that long for it to start being statistically meaningful anyway.
