Baltimore Ravens admit anthem protest contributing to empty seats - Kaplony - 12-22-2017 04:04 PM

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/21846807/baltimore-ravens-send-letter-fans-noticeable-no-shows-home-games

Quote:The Baltimore Ravens sent a letter this week to season-ticket holders, suite holders and sponsors about the number of no-shows at M&T Bank Stadium this season, citing a protest during the national anthem as one potential reason.

The letter, which was signed by team president Dick Cass, mentions that there have been empty seats in the past when the Ravens have struggled on the field. But this year is different, with Baltimore in the midst of a playoff race.

"The numbers [of no-shows] are higher, and it is noticeable," Cass wrote in the 656-word letter. "There are a number of reasons for the no-shows, but surely the one-time protest in London has been a factor."

Quote:According to Cass, the Ravens reached out to a number of fans who wrote to the team or called about the protest. Cass also personally made a number of phone calls and met with some fans, the letter stated.

"We want the Ravens to continue to be a strong, unifying force and source of pride in our community," Cass wrote. "When the Ravens win, we can bring families and the community together. We've done that before, and we can do it again.

"In light of recent events, we are also reminded that winning alone is not always enough to make the Ravens the unifying force we want to be. We don't take your support for granted, and we know that we must continue to earn your respect and investment in us."

They're gradually having to come around to reality... but the "the one-time protest in London" statement shows they are still fighting it.

Give it time. Well, and a continued loss of revenue.

If you're an NFL owner...money talks and bull_hit walks. The NFL brand is damaged from behaviors of the paid employees and they're losing money. You think the owners are going to stand pat if this continues? Keep kneeling kiddos...Colin have a job yet?

Losing money? You must have missed them selling the online rights for 20% more than the previous deal last week.

It's not just the protests but kneeling is part of the revenue loss:

Quote:As Roger Goodell, Jerry Jones, and the NFL engage in an ugly internal fight over the future leadership of the NFL, TV partners at CBS, ESPN, Fox and NBC are staring at their own internal conflicts — namely a substantial decline in NFL ratings that is on pace to cost the four networks up to $500 million in lost revenue.

Already several hundred million in lost revenue has been booked in 2017 and it has the league’s top executives and television partners scrambling to figure out what went wrong. How did a league that was setting ratings records in 2015 suddenly see its audience fall by nearly 20% just two years later.

While much of the attention has focused on the protests, according to ongoing conversations with several people close to the league and its television partners over the past couple of months, the ratings decline that will cost the TV partners up to $500 million can actually be attributed to four primary factors.

Those factors in order:

1. The decimation of the one eastern kickoff window on Sundays.
2. Bad football.
3. The addition of two teams to Los Angeles.
4. The protest

I realized had the NFL network. Never watched it but had it. Cancelled it last month.

When I started my boycott it hurt because I had been watching the Cowboys since they started in 1960. If it wasn't for the fact that I had a bet with my Raiders fan neighbor I wouldn't have watched the game. But I admit, I think I only watched the last 2 minutes. I actually felt like a traitor but 20 dollars was on the line, LOL. So far, the ex-Marine hasn't paid. He must be related to Tulane, bet welsher.

two hail mary's and an our father will make it all okay 03-wink 04-cheers

I've made a number of live-in plays this year and had to force myself to pay attention to the numbers and watch for segments when trying to hit 'middles' when sipping from the chalice a tad too much.....

we're all sinners, eh?

however, as a fan of the sport in itself, I couldn't care less about what the NoFunLeague has become.....it's boring, over commercialized, and has too many over paid narcissistic prima donnas today.....I can't prescribe to that scripture.....

I still have yet to watch a down of the NFL this year. Don't really miss it either.

I will admit, while not a huge fan of the NFL, I have always watched games over the years. As disgusted as I have been with the NFL over the kneeling, I figured it would be hard to go cold turkey from watching at least some NFL games. Well, after a few weeks, I did it and haven't missed it a lick. I have always been a far bigger college football fan and still am. Could care less about the NFL now.

Go ahead and kill off the NFL as far as I'm concerned. I'll take the lower 'must take fees' on my cable bills and lower tax rates because I don't have to pay for giveaways to right wing billionaires. And not one single openly Gay player in the history of the league. A friggin' sportsmanship award named after a vicious bigot. A toxic pool of homophobia and male privilege.

You guys want to kill it off because you're upset that a few Black people are upset over a culture of impunity of cops extrajudiciously executing Black folks? Okay. Your call. We got other problems with the NFL. And we're getting stuck with a much higher portion of the bill.

My thoughts precisely!!! I even have to wonder if the liberals are trying to cover this up by saying that CTE & millennialis not caring for football are to blame. By saying that, at the same time, I do realize that CTE is a very real & serious issue (RIP Tommy Nobis, who actually died from CTE) and the millennials are definitely different from my generation (Generation X, the millennials’ bitter generation rival, lol).

I've been protesting the NFL since their dis to Memphis.

But now folks assume I'm protesting because of the kneeling. That's fine.

Two birds with one stone.

100% agree on college football. This coming week with the better bowl matchups and the CFP is some good stuff. Kneeling overpaid prima-donna whiners check yourself at the door.

OT FWIW, I'd love to see P Diddy and Steph Curry in an ownership group buy the Panthers. Then they can see that owning a team is about being profitable and not being political.

As someone who hates the very existence of the Charlotte Panthers I heartily endorse their potential ownership and I hope they change the name to the Black Panthers and use a raised fist as their logo.

NBC protesting the NFL by not airing a Sunday Night Football finale next week. For the first time since 1977, the final week of the season will not feature a primetime game as all 16 games this Sunday will air in the regular noon and 3 pm blocks (1 and 4 pm for East Coast). Back in 1977, the finale typically would have been on Monday Night Football instead of Sunday.

Two things happening here set up this scenario. One, Sunday night is New Years Eve and the ratings would have sucked anyway even if they weren't way down to begin with. And secondly, there is no obvious marquee match-up that NBC would want for the season finale.

So the NFL is trying to spin it as a competitive situation where all the potential playoff teams will be playing at the same time. But I still see NBC's schedule was listing a game as of this morning when in reality they will have to air something else now.

I don't see the playoffs being the ratings bonanza they usually are either, with no dominant teams this year and the top team in the NFC (Philly) missing their marquee QB. Basically they can save face a bit in the Super Bowl if it's a hometown Minnesota team versus either New England or Pittsburgh. Maybe the Rams do okay if they're the NFC representative. Otherwise we're looking at the worst Super Bowl ratings in a long time.
