WAC Men's basketball thread 12/5/17-12/9/17 - NeptunianEmp - 12-05-2017 10:28 PM

Bakersfield playing a good game against Fresno State. Teams seem pretty even.

RE: WAC Men's basketball thread 12/5/17-12/9/17 - NeptunianEmp - 12-05-2017 10:47 PM

28-26 Fresno with the lead. Refs have been missing a lot of calls for both teams.

Cal State Bakersfield plays good defense most of the time. But they still foul too much. As for their offense, the Roadrunners have not been able to find consistent scoring this season. Durham has not developed into the prolific scorer he was expected to be. And, Wrapp hasn't really stepped up as a scorer either.

Excited to see what GCU looks like tonight on espn8. First time seeing them play.

RE: WAC Men's basketball thread 12/5/17-12/9/17 - NeptunianEmp - 12-06-2017 12:21 AM

70-55 Fresno State. Bakersfield can't do anything if their top players foul out.

GCU playing a good game against St. Johns.

Yes, they foul WAY too much.
My personal take, if they foul that much, is it REALLY good defense?

When they aren't fouling then they do play good defense. With this last game they did have good trapping and full court press. They tone down the fouls then they will be an excellent defense.

I think Barnes' defensive philosophy is the ref won't blow the whistle on every bump, hack, and reach by their aggressive defense. If the refs swallow their whistles even a little bit, it plays to CSUB's advantage... And, the result is CSUB's aggression intimates the other team when caught in double teams and causes them to shy away from contact when driving to the basket. CSUB wants to win ugly. It is not a dirty defense but it is a flagrantly aggressive one.

GCU isn't a good basketball team. I have no idea how they lost to Saint John's. Saint John's is awful. Arizona State will beat them by 20 on Friday.

RE: WAC Men's basketball thread 12/5/17-12/9/17 - NMSUPistolPete - 12-06-2017 12:10 PM

The games I saw last night was one team (Saint John's) that had a lot of undersized athletic players who play hard but not necessarily smart. They were not overly skilled as shooters but was able to scrap for points.

The other team had a lot of skill but because of the speed of the game (opposing defense), were unable to square their shooting form to consistently hit shots. GCU has a lot of growth potential because Majerle plays a lot of youth.

However, to this point, aside from Josh Braun (and Russell), I have yet to see Majerle stick with a player as a starter from the beginning until the end of his college career. For two years, Martin was a starter. Now he comes off the bench. And, Kerwin Smith and Matt Jackson who were once starters for Majerle early on, now continue to slide further down the bench; supplanted by younger and younger players. Heck, not to mention all the players Majerle has discarded (for under performance); no longer fitting his vision. I feel Majerle has failed to fully develop the players who are his veterans; players who might not have as much talent as his freshmen but should have a better understanding of GCU's system and play with a higher basketball IQ like in games like last night. Something is wrong when a coach is consistently playing freshmen over his veteran. There is a lot to be said for playing older "tough as nails" veterans.

NMSU isn't a good basketball. Just sad to lose tonight. A game they should have won, but poor shooting from 3, stupid turnovers, and can't hit a free throw to save their lives. An embarrassing showing tonight by NMSU. They better pick it up or this team is about to lose a bunch of games.

RE: WAC Men's basketball thread 12/5/17-12/9/17 - NMSUPistolPete - 12-06-2017 11:24 PM

Lofton is in a slump and it is killing our offense. He has shot 5 for 23 in his last three games (21.7%). Others have stepped up but they are not consistent enough from night to night to absorb Lofton's shooting drought.

RE: WAC Men's basketball thread 12/5/17-12/9/17 - dancingNMSUaggie - 12-06-2017 11:24 PM

Wow. Talked lots of smack about GCU losing at home and we did the same exact thing to the same team. Nmsu basketball team acting like they played football Saturday night. 12-20 from free throw line, soft interior defense and turnovers killed us. Seattle licking their chops right now.

I thought Harris was going to fill that void after his utep performance, but he is back to normalcy. 03-zzz

AJ Harris is only a sophomore and has never been known to be a deadeye perimeter shooter. I think over time AJ Harris will prove to be an exceptional point guard but our offense should never rely on him to be our primary scorer. Sidy has stepped up recently but he shoots the ball so flat (little arc) that Aggie fans should not count on him fill the nets from the perimeter every night. Jans needs to work with Sidy to get him to put more arc on his shot. I was hopeful Wayne Stewart would give NMSU another scoring option but he has yet to see the court. He might not be as good as his JC hype? Or, he might still be injured? If he sits out any longer, it might be in NMSU's best interest just to medical redshirt Stewart.

Last night's game was an eye opener, and not the good kind. Wac teams are proving to be very inconsistent. I would say up to this point Seattle and Utah Valley are playing way better. GCU and NMSU victories are all vs. bad or cupcake teams. If you can't beat San Diego at home. You're in trouble.

UTRGV beats UC Irvine by 14 in Texas. vaqueros down by 10+ early, but came back to win by 14.

Great night for NMSU, UTRGV, & CSUB. GCU did what we were supposed to do against a bad Grambling St team, but I will take the positive signs of life after looking bad and worse over the last 3 games. First true road game for the Lopes at Boise St this week. Would be a good W to bring home.

Normally don't cheer for GCU, but show them that the WAC is much better than the MWC!
