RE: NEW stadium construction - paintedblue2 - 02-26-2019 10:03 PM

Two precast sections are very well anchored to each other. Not only are there the visible steel connector tabs, but there are also about eight steel rods which fit into receiving ports built into the lower section. I watched as the first two sections were connected. On the first attempt it was not a good fit. Some of the rods needed to be ground down, some needed to be whacked with sledge hammers. After the second attempt one of the rods actually had to be removed. It was fine because there was pre designed redundancy. The third attempt was the charm.

They're pre-tension in sections as well then right? I'm not a engineer but this process seems like it could be more secure than post-tension as each slab can be made in a controlled environment?

I’m no engineer either, but I believe you are correct that the sections are pre-tensioned. I think this also saves some money as well. Maybe one of our engineer friends can confirm.

Oh i see what you are talking about. Yep i would be nervous too if were to handle those during some strong winds.

Once assembled they will secure against winds. Also since they are precast they save money and time because you can bet once all approvals were given they began fabrication off site in a facility where they can control the process. The interesting thing to me is because of ADA requirements I thought they would build the elevator shafts first.

Ya you typically see those first because they're part of the core in the center and usually along with the fire rated stair wells and building mechanical. Wonder if it's just due to the weird nature of the shape there isn't a need.

I was in school at the time but I dont remember if the gameday building was built with precast pieces.

RE: NEW stadium construction - cmett003 - 02-27-2019 09:50 AM

Quick Article from Harry on the stadium yesterday:

"Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium had a maximum capacity of 20,118. The new stadium will seat 21,895 fans, with an all-in capacity of 22,480 if the media, ushers, ticket takers and others are included."

Question: Are media, ushers and ticket takers usually included in attendance or is it just fans?

I'm going to guess option B. Sounds like they are just trying to make it sound better than it is.

Well, he said "capacity," which I bet he would differentiate from "attendance." Frankly, if so it's lame.

That's what happens when you stop being a reporter and start being an employee

RE: NEW stadium construction - odu09 - 02-27-2019 02:46 PM

To be honest, both numbers suck.

Can we fill the Phase 2 stadium yet? For Va Tech, UVa & ECU yes. For C-USA not so sure...

We are not talking 10-20k more seats we are talking about a couple thousand. Plus our north endzone is so bad that something needs to be done. Even if we can only fill it for those 3 games.

Seems like the construction is behind schedule based on the animated time line. Does anyone know for sure?

10 days of rain killed them. I beleive they are a week or two behind but the animated timeline is done on July 26 so there is a month of delays built into the schedule.
