That game was a lot of fun04-cheers Easy/scenic drive that I hope many of our faithful make this coming year. And I can only imagine the ECU fans who are going to show up when we play them in Norfolk. Going to be a great environment. Probably going to rival the VT game this year.

I have a daughter that is a rising Junior at ECU......really looking forward to the next two years!

This brings up a question. Off topic, sorry. I know a lot of die hard ODU people who find their kids choosing to go to rival schools. ECU, VCU, JMU, GMU. I don’t see that as much for a lot of other schools. The VT diehards I know have kids who are excited to go to their parents alma mater. JMU too. I don’t have kids, so Im not too familiar with these situations. Thoughts?

Same here - the games the next two years are going to be awesome! I hope they keep scheduling the games. They just make sense and it was the reason CUSA was so appealing to the Monarchs in the first place (before the CUSA exodus to the AAC).

That’s because they don’t want to stay home. All of those other schools allow the student to get the away college experience.

My brother and I attended ODU and are die hard season ticket holding/Monarch fans. My kids are middle school or younger, and my brother’s kids are both college level. His son went to ODU as an undergrad and is at UVA for med school (and has no interest in sports...and laughed at their UMBC loss) - and his daughter has selected VT despite receiving a scholarship from ODU. I think it’s simply a matter of each child being their own person and determining who they are and what is the best fit for him/her.

My son’s dream school is unc (intentionally lower case), but he proudly cheers for the Monarchs at the games. I don’t think there is an easy answer to your question. Too many variables in the equation.

I am an ODU alum and two major universities. The unfortunate reality is that ODU does not have the national institutional reputation that UVA and Tech have. I would probably add William & Mary to that list. I think many HS students see UVA and Tech as preferred destinations in general. I cannot explain why smaller regional universities would attract local students over ODU.

I believe wanting to get away from home for the "college experience" is a big part of it; however, I can only speak for my kids.....oldest applied to ODU as her safety school (sorry but it is true) and ended up at JMU where she absolutely loved it and often mentions wishing she could relive her four years there. Youngest didn't even apply at ODU and wanted nothing to do with it, ended up at ECU and so far she is loving her experience. Also, as a point of reference we live in Hampton Roads, which is another factor in the getting away from home part.

RE: NEW stadium construction - monarx - 05-13-2018 02:16 PM

Yeah, I guess the want to get away part makes sense. The VT and JMU legacy kids I know are from Hampton Roads. Maybe kids of Tech grads in Roanoke feel the same way. I just see families who take a lot of pride in having multiple generations having attended there and wish ODU could do more to get a legacy pipeline going. ODU grads raise good, smart kids. Just the type we need at ODU. I hate seeing them going off to the VCU, ECUs and JMUs.

True - ODU has made substantial progress in improving its academic reputation. But it still has more road to travel. I think the “college experience” is expensive and my nephew saved a lot of money (..or my brother since he was footing the bill) by attending ODU and living at home. He would have been facing substantial debt going into med school.

RE: NEW stadium construction - ETSUDB8-79 - 06-01-2018 09:40 AM

In case you missed it elsewhere the NEW Stadium was approved by the State Legislature complete with the extra $10 million we wanted in the budget. Assuming the Gov. signs it (and so far everyone says he will) we are done with the process. So this will be the last year in the old stadium and right after the VMI game Nov. 17 it will be out with the old and in with the new. https://pilotonline.com/sports/college/old-dominion/football/article_28f29e1c-64db-11e8-b200-035e08cad3e7.html *The stuff on our stadium budget passing is in the 2nd bullet point of the article. 04-cheers

RE: NEW stadium construction - ODU AGGIE - 06-01-2018 01:50 PM

Now if we can just put a two week kink in the construction schedule by hosting the conference championship game on Dec 1st.
04-cheers

Not sure if you're trying to stir the pot but we got our stadium budget approved. Designs are out. Work is going to start in the coming months. When the new digs open in 2019, we will have a stadium that has cost us around $90 million.

looks nice and expandable, also looks like alot for just $72 million in comparison to what we are doing especially in the press box area. hope our second phase will really beef up our stadium but im just happt we are finally ready to get this done

How in the world are they getting all that for only $8 million more than us, when we already have the game day building built? It doesn't look like we're getting much of a stadium for the money, compared to others. Also, I've heard from a person who follows the ODU program closely and is "in the know" that the "2nd phase" may never happen as an actual phase. Supposedly they don't even have drawings for it. Any improvements to our stadium will be incremental, not a full-scale "phase 2". Thinking maybe some new suites several years down the road and and new end zone at some point off in the future. If demand increases, perhaps a second deck could be added one day. It all depends on money, which this person said wasn't coming in as quickly as it seemed. But whatever happens will probably be piece meal.
