RE: NEW stadium construction - monarx - 07-14-2019 08:31 PM

Saw the new stadium for the first time today. First impressions. The good: It definitely looks more like a college football stadium. I like the chair backs, the brick along the edges of the front row, the LED boards, the two brick towers and the view from Bluestone is not bad. The press box, while not great, is not as bad in person. The legroom looks like it will be much better. The floors are sealed up so we don’t need to worry about drinks spilling on those below. The bad: while a little larger, it’s still quite small. I was hoping to be able to see it rising up from the Ted, driving down the Blvd., but that’s not the case. You can’t see it from the street any better than before except from straight across at WHRO. I think the second deck may make it rise up enough to make an impact, but for now I was rather underwhelmed. You can see VT and JMU stadiums towering up from a distance making an impressive visual statement. If one isn’t looking for the Steve it could easily be missed. It also seems to be lacking in fine architectural details, at least so far, other than the arches which are hidden on the back side Of the stadium, and the ODU spelled out in the seats. Lots of corrugated aluminum siding at the top. The concourse isn’t in yet that I saw. My guess is most of the upgrades are in sound, plumbing and electrical, plus bathrooms and concessions. As my wife said, “it doesn’t look like they got much more stadium for $65 million”. It’s definitely an improvement though, and should be a fun place to watch a game. I just think we built what would have been one of the nicest 1aa stadiums in the country. But it will take phase two happening for It to become the FBS game changing place we are all desiring. Just my first impression. And there’s still work to be done, so maybe that will change.

04-cheers I would be willing to pay an extra fee to drink in my OWN seats during a game!!! 04-cheers

$10 beers include extra fees. Just give people two beer (or other beverage)vouchers for each game, Similar to how the BBR does.

I haven't been in the BBR since 2013 so perhaps they got rid of them. But something similar to that would work.

You want them to give away an item a lot of fans have no issue paying for? What exactly would that accomplish?

Not at all. Im saying with the appropriate donation the season ticket holder gets 2 beverage vouchers for designated use at each game. That way, if the donor wants to get a beer at the concession stand and drink at their seat, they can. Rather than go down to the area under the game day building. It allows the donor to use their benefit in more places and basically has them pre-buy their beverages along with their donation. So hopefully it would accomplish keeping fans in their seats rather than in the beer area. It would keep the beer area less crowded. It would allow donors more freedom on how to access their privileges. And it would be another added benefit to encourage people to donate.

You're overthinking this. There is a much simpler solution. Allow fans to take beers out of the beer garden and to their seats.

RE: NEW stadium construction - DaBigBlue - 07-15-2019 10:58 AM

ODU is NOT going to give away beers. The contract we have with Aramark, they control and profit from all beer sales on the campus of ODU. When ODAF was giving away beers in the BBR, they were buying them from Aramark to give away, was costing $100,000s each year. Beer sales at ODU does nothing to help our bottom line, only Aramark's. There is no windfall to be made with beer, only benefits the fan's experience.

RE: NEW stadium construction - bit_9 - 07-15-2019 11:08 AM

^ what DaBigBlue said. Not until the Aramark contract is up (when is that?) would anything really change in that regard for us - at least from a profit standpoint. It'd be purely pass-through cost for a demand of customers.

It sounds more and more like Aramark's contract screws ODU. Anyone know when its up for renegotiation? We need to be able to make some money somehow. I had no idea ODU had to buy those beers from Aramark. Thats ridiculous. ODAF should be able to buy some kegs, hire some students to bartend and make half a million a year in beer alone. Edit: For some reason, I was under the impression Norfolk Beverage or some donor actually donated the kegs for the BBR back in the day. I wonder if ODU gave away beer as a thank you for a donation (rather than sell it), we could get around the Aramark hurdles.

6/30/2025 per the contract site.

Edit:

Contract was renewed in 2015 and is 10 years, so 2025 is accurate. Below is a link to the last 10-year contract (I can't find the current one). It does specifically mention alcohol at the Ted and Foreman field in which everything must be provided by Aramark and by Aramark exclusively.

RE: NEW stadium construction - monarchfan4life - 07-15-2019 11:43 AM

The University gets a percentage of Aramark's profits by virtue of its contract. that revenue is used to support many initiatives at the University that cannot be funded with state funds. I'm not sure if there are any restrictions on the sale of alcoholic beverages, however.

Good point! It's not a failure of a deal, outside of pure alcohol sales profits (we assume).

But, at our size it makes a lot of sense. Otherwise we gotta come up with all the overhead to produce.

Wait. You mean after spending $67m to give high end fans their requested seat cushions and chair backs vs adding at least 2,000 seats, ODU still might have to worry about people not sitting in them? Oh brother! <forehead slap>

The fact that the money is "unrestricted" is definitely good in that it could in theory be used for athletics then.. I guess. Thanks for the info.
