As an FBI agent, Strzok's use of text messaging for such an enterprise was nothing short of moronic in this digital age, but nevertheless he was not fired but simply and quietly sent to FBI "Siberia" last summer, his activities only miraculously coming to public attention last week.
Why the secrecy? Many reasons, probably yet to be determined, but it comes down to this: the FBI, like the Mafia, practices omertà...."

Doubtful, but one thing is for certain.....he wouldn't have allowed the FBI to get in the shape it's currently in. While he was the ultimate political animal he would have never allowed his baby to be overtaken by the political establishment like it currently is.
J. Edgar, for all his major faults, was not beholden to any politician and believed in the sanctity of an FBI being independent from political pandering.

I get that, but IMO the only thing Hoover wanted to king of was the FBI. If he had desired higher office he could have had it.
And I would much prefer a FBI beholden to only itself than one that's in the pocket of one political party regardless of which party it is.
