Things could get interesting at Arkansas today - AllTideUp - 12-03-2017 08:39 AM

NWAonline reports

Here's an interesting article about what's been happening behind the scenes at Arkansas the last several years. It's good stuff, but the money quote is buried at the bottom.

The very last line of the article is this:

Quote:It is believed a new head coach will be announced today, with a new athletic director, and maybe the UA can move forward.

Tubberville might be the new A.D. We'll see about Malzahn. Interestingly Auburn is also going to be acquiring a new A.D.

Arkansas "dead serious" about getting Gus. Figure thrown around is $50 million for 7 years.

Arkansas interest real as Auburn's Gus Malzahn wants to be loved -- and paid

That's a touch over 7 million a year which is about what I had assumed they would offer. But then comes the 13.5 million dollar buyout. Gus's current contract averages about 4.5 million a year and run's through the 2020 season. Auburn could easily match 7 million, or probably keep him for 6 because of the buyout.

Or, we could let Arkie buy him out and we could put that money into a war chest to go after a bigger hire. The musical chairs will start again when F.S.U. goes to hire. So we'll see.

You saying Auburn is no a big dog? Auburn with the right coach is smack in the middle of the best recruiting States.

No, I'm saying if Arkansas wants him bad enough to pay his buyout 13.5 million, and pay him 7 plus million a year they might be welcomed to him.

Auburn could put that 13.5 million with the 7 million we needed to offer Gus and pay 8.5 million and go after another top coach. We are a much bigger dog money wise than Arkansas. We are the 10th biggest money dog in the nation.

I'm telling you Gus has deficits:
1. Everyone knows his offense now.
2. His offense requires a QB with very specific skill sets which he can't teach. His only success has come when he gets a transfer QB who already has those skill sets: Newton, Marshall, Stidham.
3. He plays injured starters instead of developing depth during the season and then he plays them until they are too injured to continue. (White, Pettway, Johnson, etc.)
4. He has tunnel vision and no matter what ESPN says he really still calls the plays.
5. He can't adjust during a game to improve our ability to compete when strengths are taken away.

So if you guys want him and are willing to pay 7 million plus the buyout I think Auburn would be stupid to counter. There are better people we can hire.

After Bert severely mismanaged the program, I expect Arkansas to over pay for someone that “knows” the states recruiting and limitations.

Let’s see how this goes.

I'm curious if the Auburn faithful think enough of Gus to get into a bidding war over him.

Well quit thinking. They just came to terms on a new contract. He might be making 7 million for the next 5 years. I'm not thrilled at all and know many more who aren't but they didn't ask me. I guess this is what happens when you dismiss your dumb*** A.D., but he hasn't yet been replaced and your new president knows nothing about sports.

I'm afraid we're going to regret this.

It's time to hit the puddin' hard.

In all seriousness this couldn't be a worse time to be out looking for a coach.

BOT met for a loooiong time and announced no decisions were made. Then hours later, Houston ‘s AD accepts Arkansas AD job.

I suspect the new AD, BOT, and BMD’s get their thoughts together and then go after their man.

Morris, Norvell, Leach, Venerables and Kiffen seem to be the popular candidates

I really hope its not Kiffen. He will just end up screwing us over.

Norvell signs extension at Memphis.

Hogs rumored to sign Cad Morris to HC and he’ll target Brent Venerables as DC with lucrative contract.

Venables currently makes 1.4 million at Clemson. He would be a really good hire for Arkansas. Morris? We'll see.

Venables makes $1.7M, I believe. Hard to see him taking a DC job at Arkansas. I’d guess his next move is a HC job.
