Thought Experiment. How does Alabama's 2017 resume look if they're not Alabama? - johnbragg - 12-02-2017 10:22 PM

Is Alabama No. 5 and in discussion for a playoff spot because of their 2017 resume, or because of their resume over the last 10 or so years with Nick Saban? I'm going to try to swap out Alabama and Auburn and find out what it looks like.

Auburn
W Clemson, 41-3 (in Atlanta). Clemson goes 6-6, Dabo Swinney leaves.
W Fresno State 41-10
W Colorado State 41-23
W @ Vanderbilt 59-0
W Ole Miss 66-3
W @ Texas A&M 27-19
W Arkansas 41-9
W Georgia, 45-7. Georgia goes winless in SEC play, fires coach
W LSU, 24-10
W @ Mississippi State, 31-24
W FCS
L @ Alabama, Iron Bowl, 26-14.

IS that team #5 going into CCG Week?

I would still say yes. At some point the quality and quantity of losses matter. If you look at all of the 0 and 1 loss teams, you have the following:

“Florida State” (11-1, replacing real-life Clemson) who lost to Syracuse (4-8)
Miami, who lost to Pittsburgh (5-7)
Oklahoma, who lost to Iowa State (7-5)
“Auburn”, who lost to “Alabama” (10-2)
“Tennessee” (11-1, replacing real-life Georgia), who lost to “Alabama” (10-2)
UCF (12-0)
Wisconsin (12-0)

The two SEC schools dropped games against much higher caliber opponents

This resume isn’t big on quality wins, but there aren’t any real head-scratching losses. In my opinion Oklahoma is underrated a bit, but admittedly they did not dominate their conference opponents the way this hypothetical Auburn team did. In this exercise “Florida State” has the best win (“Alabama”) followed by Miami (Notre Dame plus MAC Champion Toledo), although Miami has even worse issues with not dominating their opponents.[/i]

Thanks for reading. Also, after today, Alabama is #1 in Sagarin's ratings. So they're not just a paper tiger living off of Saban's rep and being in the national championship game/ playoffs 6 of the past 8 years. Not that Sagarin is the be-all end-alll, or that I've decided if I think Alabama or Ohio State should be in, but Sagarin's computer can't be fooled by your rep.

Thnk good arguments both ways and honestly dont feel confident in my Buckeyes if they do make it. If Rose Bowl was not a semi final, I would be rooting to be left out and have Big Ten champ vs. PAC-12 champ. Since Rose Bowl is a semi, rooting to get in and think we just do. The committeee has shown time and again that it cares about wins more than it cares about loses, or at least views them equally (the polls always cared more about losses)

To me, Alabama deserves the playoffs more than Ohio State. I can easily imagine Alabama having Ohio State's wins (beating Penn State by a harrowingly narrow margin, Ohio State looked dead and beaten in that home game well in to the 4th quarter, and Wisconsin, in underwhelming fashion), i can't imagine Alabama losing by 31 to Iowa (in a thousand years) or by 15 at home to anyone.

But i do think politics heavily favors Ohio State. Ohio State has been on the edge twice before, and both times the committee has decided in their favor, they obviously carry great political weight, and the roar of anger out of the entire B1G territory if two SEC teams get in and the B1G is left out will be mighty. The CFP knows this.

Then let it be Alabama!

Ia ia Cthulhu Ftang!

Blow, winds, and crack your cheeks! rage! blow!
You cataracts and hurricanoes, spout
Till you have drench'd our steeples, drown'd the cocks!

Bring on the storm, and when the waters recede, the glorious dawn of the 8 team playoff with 6 autobids and 2 at larges!

Ohio State should not be in the top 7, but they are a name that sells and will get the spot. Losing to Iowa by 30 or what ever it was should disqualify them with one loss. No 2 loss school should even be considered. They already loss the playoff.

As for 8 team playoff, It ain't gonna happen until this deal is done.

Eh, I'm not going to say that a 2-loss team is NEVER considered as a No. 4.

The Iowa loss probably should be disqualifying--if it isn't, why aren't we talking USC?

I know.
