Meanwhile in Puerto Rico - Tom in Lazybrook - 11-30-2017 10:39 AM Tomorrow will be December 1 1) About half the island is still without power. Much of the island still doesn't have water https://thinkprogress.org/puerto-rico-relief-failure-7b79030d2ab9/ 2) The GOP's tax plan contains a 20 percent increase in taxes on goods manufactured in Puerto Rico https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-11-28/drugmakers-hold-key-to-puerto-rico-s-future-in-u-s-tax-overhaul BTW, Manufacturing, not tourism, is - or rather was - Puerto Rico's largest employer 3) The disastrous Jones Act is still in place. 4) Reports are showing the death toll was far higher than previously reported https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/11/29/16623926/puerto-rico-death-toll-hurricane-maria-count ----- And the result of this is that Puerto Ricans are fleeing to Florida in increasing numbers. Reports are that over 200,000 have fled to Florida alone since October. And every outbound seat to Florida is full through January. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/latino/over-200-000-puerto-ricans-have-arrived-florida-hurricane-maria-n825111 Estimates have now said that around 750,000 Puerto Ricans will move from the island in the next 5 years. Some might return, but only if there's something for them to go back to. Not all of the 750,000 will go to Florida, but most will of them will. Even before the storm, 80,000 Puerto Ricans per year were leaving the island anyway. The inadequate response to Maria just basically doubled it. The problem is that if Trump's tax bill destroys the manufacturing base, this could turn into a greater flood. RE: Meanwhile in Puerto Rico - banker - 11-30-2017 10:49 AM How many New Yorkers "flee" New York every year for Florida? RE: Meanwhile in Puerto Rico - Lord Stanley - 11-30-2017 10:53 AM A blue state hemorrhaging blue voters because of blue policies and a recent natural disaster is..................... wait for it.................. the fault of the current American president in office for a little over a year. Got it. RE: Meanwhile in Puerto Rico - rath v2.0 - 11-30-2017 11:00 AM It's just something to attempt to change the focus. Been a bad month all around for him. RE: Meanwhile in Puerto Rico - Lush - 11-30-2017 11:04 AM i say just move all the puerto ricans stateside and leave the island as an eco reserve. let nature reclaim all the buildings and then centuries upon centuries from now some budding new species will uncover ruins of ancient strip malls and marvel at how advanced we must have been RE: Meanwhile in Puerto Rico - shere khan - 11-30-2017 11:15 AM PR was a man-made disaster long before a natural disaster finished it off. Now it's Trumps fault. Stupidity RE: Meanwhile in Puerto Rico - cb4029 - 11-30-2017 11:18 AM No worries. Trump will ship those brown people back where they came from. They don't belong in America.

Trump failed the response to Maria. And the GOP tax plan will devastate the economy even worse that the storm would. Both of those are on the GOP. RE: Meanwhile in Puerto Rico - EagleX - 11-30-2017 11:25 AM don't worry. those factories are shut down right now, and all of that pharmaceutical manufacturing is currently being moved out of puerto rico. it won't be coming back. so, there won't really be anything to tax. problem solved! RE: Meanwhile in Puerto Rico - ECUGrad07 - 11-30-2017 11:26 AM Has the Mayor of San Juan been by the FEMA tent yet to coordinate efforts? Or is she still parading around on TV in anti-Trump shirts? Asking for a friend. And they exaggerate how bad it is on TV, going to absolutely the worst spots. That's a rough quote from a Puerto Rican my wife talked to recently. That type of migration will happen anyway. And the rate of migration remains stable over time. The situation in Puerto Rico is that this immigration is new, and its increasing, and it might even increase further as time goes on. But by all means, feel free to ignore it. RE: Meanwhile in Puerto Rico - Tom in Lazybrook - 11-30-2017 12:07 PM (11-30-2017 11:49 AM)miko33 Wrote: Give Puerto Rico their independence and walk away. Put immigration controls to prevent them from fleeing to the U.S. Problem solved. LOL Even if Puerto Rico voted for independence.... Every single last person on the island would remain a US citizen, per the US constitution, which assigns citizenship based upon their status at the time of their birth. And, pretty much everyone on that island born AFTER independence would be a US citizen based upon the fact that their parents are US citizens by birth. Now the US could change the immigration laws for everyone to state that persons born outside the USA to American parents are no longer US citizens, but that's going to impact a lot of people and it would never pass. But that will do nothing to change the status of those already born. Now if you'd like to propose independence for Puerto Rico, you'd need to sell it to the Puerto Ricans....and Trump's banker buddies, all of whom would lose billions when an independent Puerto Rico declaims all of the debt accrued while it was a US colony. By the way, the percentage support for independence in Puerto Rico is around 5%. You'd never get them to agree to it. Unless you're changing the constitution, you're not stopping or even slowing down Puerto Rican migration to the US mainland. Unless we provide them with the assistance needed for them to be productive economically - something that we do for states. Just in case you're wondering....DJT got 49% of the vote in Florida, beating HRC by 103,000 votes. Not all Puerto Ricans in Florida will stay, and not all will vote for the Dems, but you can look at Osceola County (where 90% of the Hispanic population is Puerto Rican) to see the voting rates and preferences for newer Puerto Rican migrants to Florida. Adding 500,000 to 750,000 Puerto Ricans by the next election might flip Florida, before any other issues with any other groups come up. 204,000 so far. RE: Meanwhile in Puerto Rico - SuperFlyBCat - 11-30-2017 12:14 PM Puerto Rico is terribly corrupt, their economy has been in the toilet for years, and they have been losing a large % of the population to other parts of the USA for years.
