RE: Garrison Keillor - bullet - 11-29-2017 12:55 PM

So much for one of Franken's potential replacements.

Guess Keillor is not above average.

RE: Garrison Keillor - Lord Stanley - 11-29-2017 01:00 PM

Never bought his schtick, which is basically helping upper-class, Subaru driving, Whole Food shopping, alpaca wearing Minneapolis St-Paul area far left liberal arts college graduating white haired Lutherans assuage their white guilt about being born upper-class.

Except I do love trotting this one whenever possible: "where all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average."

That's a good line.

Who made the $10 bet on the other thread?

RE: Garrison Keillor - shere khan - 11-29-2017 01:12 PM

I remember being given his book lake wobegone days years ago, reading a few chapters and thinking in was boring and a crock of shite. I was younger and more tolerant of foolishness back then.

Al Franken should resign? That’s absurd.

By Garrison Keillor November 28 at 8:08 PM

Update, 1:14 p.m. Nov. 29: After we published this column, Minnesota Public Radio announced it was terminating its contracts with Garrison Keillor due to “allegations of his inappropriate behavior with an individual who worked with him.” The Post takes allegations of this kind seriously and is seeking more information about them.

My favorite entry from Lake Wobbegon:

Quote:It was a quiet late Fall day in Lake Woebegon, the frost glisten of Sven Olson's pond. I stopped by the Chatterbox cafe for a cup of coffee with Al Franken, and we agreed to treat ourselves to a waitress sandwich. Later Al and I took a brisk walk to LuAnne Magendanz's Bon Marché Beauty Parlor and Salon to do peter presses on the window for the Lutheran farm wives.

That reminds me of something I saw two co-workers do to our boss a hundred years ago while we were riding in the back of his pick up. I'll leave the story for another day.

RE: Garrison Keillor - Fort Bend Owl - 11-29-2017 07:07 PM

I don't think I've ever listened to his show - never could understand the hubbub about it.

But I'll give Keillor props for having the most interesting response to the allegations.

“I put my hand on a woman’s bare back,” he wrote. “I meant to pat her back after she told me about her unhappiness and her shirt was open and my hand went up it about six inches. She recoiled. I apologized. I sent her an email of apology later and she replied that she had forgiven me and not to think about it.”

Mr. Keillor claimed that they continued to be friends “right up until her lawyer called.”

He insisted his discomfort with physical affection was common knowledge, adding, “If I had a dollar for every woman who asked to take a selfie with me and who slipped an arm around me and let it drift down below the beltline, I’d have at least a hundred dollars.”

“Getting fired is a real distinction in broadcasting and I’ve waited fifty years for the honor. All of my heroes got fired. I only wish it could’ve been for something more heroic.”

Lol. Remove the parts you added and it's like literary ambien.

If getting fired is an honor I bet he would really love to get his ass kicked

RE: Garrison Keillor - usmbacker - 11-30-2017 03:54 AM

Quote:Keillor's announcement Wednesday morning that he had been fired by Minnesota Public Radio for "inappropriate behavior" came just one day after he was published in the Washington Post defending fellow Minnesotan Al Franken, a Democratic senator who has been accused by multiple women of groping them.

The piece, which called the notion that Franken should resign "absurd," made no mention of the $9,700 Keillor gave to Franken's two senate campaigns or the $10,000 he gave to Franken's Midwest Values PAC, which make up a small percentage of the hundreds of thousands of dollars Keillor has supplied Democratic candidates and groups with since 1992.

Other recipients of Keillor's money include the party's last three presidential nominees—former President Barack Obama got $7,200, Hillary Clinton got $3,450, and John Kerry got $750. (Democrat Martin O'Malley got $1,250 in 2015 as well.)

Keillor also headlined a fundraiser for Clinton in 2015.

Keillor has also contributed to all the main Democratic committees, including $93,150 to the Democratic National Committee, $51,360 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, and $56,616 to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Among active members of the U.S. Senate to receive contributions from Keillor other than Franken are Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.), Jeanne Shaheen (D., N.H.), Patty Murray (D., Wash.), Tammy Baldwin (D., Wisc.), Heidi Heitkamp (D., N.D.), Jon Tester (D., Mont.), Claire McCaskill (D., Mo.), Dick Durbin (D., Ill.), Tom Udall (D., N.M.), Ron Wyden (D., Ore.), and Amy Klobuchar (D., Minn.).

Keillor's contributions have continued in 2017. Recipients this cycle include Democratic House minority leader Nancy Pelosi, the DCCC, the DNC, and Franken's Minnesota colleague Amy Klobuchar, who has already received $4,700 for her 2018 reelection effort from Keillor.

I found that to be both gripping and touching! I guess now we finally know what happened to his Prairie Home "Companion" huh?
