2017-2018 Basketball Season - GE and MTS - 11-11-2017 09:14 AM

Liberty started the season off right by destroying Summit. This was not surprising in the least as Summit wasn't a Division I school.

How do you guys see the season going? I was looking at several preseason rankings and I was surprised to see us only ranked third or so in the Big South. I think we have most of the team returning and we did well last season, especially in the tournament (CBI I think).

RE: 2017-2018 Basketball Season - SlyFox - 11-11-2017 11:45 AM

I will be disappointed if we don't have a 20-win season. But the Paradise Jam begins on Tuesday at Wake Forest followed by a home game against Mercer. Then we have two more Paradise Jam games at home against top caliber competition. That four game stretch will give us a much better idea of how far Coach McKay has taken this squad. Do not discount the return of Caleb. I am really excited to see what he is able to accomplish as his health improves and he has Georgie distributing to him.

RE: 2017-2018 Basketball Season - Ewglenn - 11-11-2017 07:21 PM

I see High Point as the only real threat to Liberty this year. I think somewhere in the 20-22 wins in the regular season should be expected.

I'm genuinely excited about this team. Scottie James was fantastic last night against bigger guys. The key for this team is to win 2 out of the 3 PJ games. I'd hate to play Wake again, because it's tough to beat the same team twice in a week, but I love the core of Cabbill, Homesley, and James. Success has to be 20+ reg season wins and at least a BSC title game. I love Ritchie, but his teams always performed poorly in BSC tourney; we lost to a mediocre-at-best Radford team with Seth C and were upset again last year after a really good reg season. If the main guys stay healthy, no excuses to bow out early in the BSC tourney.

Realistically, we should have around 7 wins heading into conference play, so, 13-5, 14-4 in conference should do the trick.

Welcome to Liberty, where disappointment and underachievement reign supreme! No matter the sport, we always have at least one boneheaded loss that ruins the season.

Lol I’m well aware. Went to the only BSC tourney game Seth Curry played for us at Radford as a student in 09. I’m used to the disappointment.

I was there too and it looked like the team just mailed it in. Then right after that Curry announces his transfer and then McKay leaves right after that. Good times!

I’m not upset about losing to Mercer. I am upset about losing to them at home. I am upset about being blown out at home. But that tends to happen when you can’t score, can’t defend, and can’t rebound. Oh well, there goes the peefect undefeated season. Wink wink.

Heartbreaking loss to Houston. Had a chance to win but couldn't finish. Wake Forest is looking less impressive as time goes and they keep losing so beating UH would have been helpful and regained some momentum.

Tough loss but it looks like this team is able to compete with anyone as long as they show up.

Very interested to see this teams heart and resiliency vs. Quinnippiac. That game is quite important. It’ll keep us with a winning record and show what our kids toughness and mental state is after two straight hard loses. I expect to win.

Yeah we should easily win that game. I would expect a 7-10 point win.

RE: 2017-2018 Basketball Season - GE and MTS - 11-19-2017 10:27 AM

If we are as good as we think we are, we need to beat Quinnippiac and I expect us to do just that.

RE: 2017-2018 Basketball Season - Ewglenn - 11-19-2017 02:56 PM

Liberty won 84-72. Good to get a win.

RE: 2017-2018 Basketball Season - SlyFox - 11-19-2017 05:19 PM

Five of our next six games are at home against teams we should beat. It would be great build up some momentum heading intot he Christmas Tourney in New Orleans followed by league play.

RE: 2017-2018 Basketball Season - army56mike - 11-21-2017 06:03 PM

Here’s how the Paradise Jam finished up.

1. Colorado (3-0) - (5-0)
2. Mercer (2-1) -(4-2)
3. Drake (2-1) - (3-1)
4. Houston (2-1) - (3-1)
5. Drexel (1-2) - (2-3)
6. Wake Forest (1-2) - (1-4)
7. Liberty (1-2) - (3-2)
8. Quinnipiac (0-3) - (1-4)

Would have liked to finish in the top half of the bracket with a 2-1 record, but Oh well. Coming up we have this all before Christmas.....

Toccoa Falls (who cares)
Howard (0-5)
UNCG (3-1)
@ Georgia St. (3-1)
MD Eastern Shore (1-3)
KY Christian (who cares)
Ft. Wayne (3-1)

Hope we win at least 5 of those 7 games.

RE: 2017-2018 Basketball Season - GE and MTS - 11-21-2017 09:41 PM

Didn't Liberty play Wake as part of the Paradise Jam? I wonder why that wasn't counted towards the standings.

RE: 2017-2018 Basketball Season - Cider Jim - 11-22-2017 01:30 AM

No, LU beat Wake Forest by 13 points in Winston-Salem. That was an away game and NOT part of the Paradise Jam held in Lynchburg.

RE: 2017-2018 Basketball Season - army56mike - 11-22-2017 05:52 AM

I think 5 of these 7 is the floor here. Reasonably, the only game they could lose is @ GSU. UNCG is a nice program, but at home should be a W. They could actually win all 7 of these. We may have 10+ wins non-con before we get to Big South play, depending on the New Orleans games. How awesome would that be? We could be looking at a 22-23 win reg season.
