Correction. Urzua is done with football due to concussion.

RE: Richie James done - ThreeifbyLightning - 11-01-2017 07:40 AM

The first concussion he suffered came in 2013, his junior year of high school. Then, on Nov. 26, 2016, he suffered his second in a game against FAU. Urzua said he was not concerned at the time that his career might be in jeopardy.

“My parents were a little concerned, but I knew I was going to return," he said. "I didn’t really have a doubt about it.”

A third concussion — this one within about 11 months of his previous — changed everything.

In the middle of the third quarter of MTSU’s game against visiting Marshall on Oct. 21, Urzua rolled out to the right but didn’t see any receivers open downfield. With a Marshall defensive lineman barreling toward him, the 6-foot-3, 189-pound quarterback got rid of the ball by throwing it out of bounds. He was hit on his release, but what did the most significant damage was the way his head hit the ground.

“I hit it pretty solid, and the turf doesn’t give too much,” Urzua said. “I knew immediately that I was a little messed up. I was definitely dizzy, kind of clueless, but I kept playing. I think I played two more drives before saying anything.”

MTSU coach Rick Stockstill sensed something was wrong — “He had a different look about him in his eyes,” Stockstill said — and replaced Urzua with freshman Kyle Banks by the start of the fourth quarter.

This has been a season from hell. As I stated previously, I will never again allow myself to be excited about an upcoming season.

And I now have every reason to believe this is going to rub off on basketball. 16-16 here we come.

Sad to hear about all the injuries. Hate to see kids get hurt. It's a tough game but they have their whole lives ahead of them. Best of luck to them.

Even though I despise Middle, I hate it for them.

Brent Stockstill will be coming back this week if his MRI goes well.

Whenever I feel like we are snake bit this season with all of the close losses, I remind myself we could have MTU's luck. Tough break guys. Good luck going forward.

We were the snakebit team last year. The pendulum eventually swings back.

We were too. We had a very fluid o-line.

We do need MTSU in a bowl.

Having a good thought for them. Team loyalty aside, I don't like seeing players get hurt or suffer any form of trauma.
