No, or at least the last 30+ years.

Not sure how anyone outside of athletics would know that. Partial qualifiers (which I think is now an “academic redshirt”) can practice but not play. So pretty much anyone who has redshirted as a freshmen could have been a partial qualifier.
I am pretty sure that Moseley was an academic redshirt. I thought it was something related to transcripts, but definitely vaguely remember hearing something about it back then.

Edit: Should have read through before commenting.

The CAA had a rule that did not allow it. CUSA does not have that rule (thus Marshall), but Im pretty sure ODU also doesn't allow it.

Then explain Mosley.

He was here during the last year of the CAA.
He didn’t play, which means he was at minimum a partial qualifier.
He wasn’t allowed to sit on the bench, which means he most likely wasn’t practicing

The Mosley situation was unique, because it came down to the inability to get a transcript from one of his high schools in Florida. While technically he wasn’t academically eligible, because of the circumstances, he was able to be on scholarship (which is not the case for non-qualifiers.)

The University, as a rule, does not admit non-qualifiers, and in fact, the Admissions standards by which the coaches must play are higher than NCAA minimums.

So he was a non qualifier (by the NCAA’s definition). Therefore ODU has admitted non qualifiers, unless you truly believe that the one missing transcript would have boosted his GPA so high that he wouldn’t have had an issue getting into ODU if he wasn’t an athlete.

I sincerely doubt that ODU aid basing decisions off of the NCAA’s standards. Considering ODU doesn’t even use the same GPA standard as the NCAA.

The NCAA doesn’t allow non-qualifiers to be on scholarship. Mosley was on one. He was not a typical “non-qualifier” in the NCAA’s mind. His GPA and test scores qualified him. But the NCAA could not verify one of his transcripts through no fault of Mosley’s. It was an exceptional case.

So they treated him as a partial qualifier?

Basically, bro, if you look at his UNCW bio the following is stated:

Attended Hargrave (post grad)
Attended First Coast (& won a state championship his sophomore year).

That means only his 9th grade year -at worse- wasn’t being counted. When you go post grad it’s for 1 of 2 reasons: better offers or need better grades. My guess? He needed better grades (because he would have found out going into his post grad year what he needed for eligibility).

Partial qualifiers only have 3 years of eligibility though, right? Has that changed?
