Sagarin poll - bullet - 10-29-2017 11:55 AM

http://sagarin.com/sports/cfsend.htm

Sagarin has Ohio ST. 2, Penn ST. 3 and UGA 4. Also Auburn at 6-2 is ahead of OU and Ok. St. at 9 and 10. Wisconsin is only at 11.

Conference rankings are interesting. Has Big 12 #1, Big 10 #2 (when you average the divisions), ACC #3, Pac 12 #4 and SEC #5. MVC is ahead of CUSA and Sun Belt and just behind MAC. SEC West is, of course, the top division, but the average is brought down by the SEC East.

RE: Sagarin poll - uakronkid - 10-29-2017 01:23 PM

I'm not a fan of him breaking things down into conference divisions. It seems like it was meant to highlight the difference in the SEC divisions in particular, but it makes the data look overcrowded for everything else.

RE: Sagarin poll - DavidSt - 10-29-2017 01:32 PM

It shows conferences like MVFC, CAA and Big Sky belongs in FBS.MVFC is better than SBC.

Actually shows that the MAC, Sun Belt, and C-USA shouldn't be in FBS.

Here it is with the conferences combined. (I use central mean to combine them just like he does for the divisions.)

Sagarin Conference Ranking
Code:

1    BIG 12                  79.20
2    ACC                     77.81
3    BIG TEN                 77.45
4    PAC-12                  77.26
5    SEC                     76.27
6    AMERICAN ATHLETIC       66.80
7    I-A INDEPENDENTS        66.29
8    MWC                     63.77
9    MISSOURI VALLEY         61.12
10    MAC                     60.46
11    CONFERENCE USA          56.32

And a quibble to the OP: Sagarin is not a poll, it's a rating. While there's some overlap between the terms, a poll involves the opinions of multiple humans, a ranking tends to be the opinion of a single human, and a rating tends to be some form of objective(computer) system.

The Missouri Valley being ranked ahead of MAC/CUSA/SBELT for 8th best in football is pretty incredible.

That computer ranking system has long been favorable to FSC schools.

I've always wondered whether the FCS buy games that "could have been" 70pts or more, except they brought in the third string early in the third quarter, inflates FCS ratings by underestimating how big the gap is between some of the FCS schools and the P5 schools that they are brought in to play.

Well some say that the MAC/CUSA/Funbelt is essentially FCS just going after the checks.

Take out the best of those schools that have upset wins from those three FBS conferences, and plug them into the top FCS conferences? They would be up there big time. SBC keeps watering themselves down with teams that do not help them in the ratings. Georgia State and Coastal Carolina weakens them even more. Youngstown State is better than several of the MAC Ohio schools.

Take the 5 best MAC schools that have the most upset wins against P5, and add them to the MVFC, and you get a 16 team strong team. Boot Missouri State to C-USA or Sun Belt, and ask North Dakota to stay with Big Sky, you get this:

MVFC:
West:
North Dakota State
South Dakota
South Dakota State
Northern Iowa
Northern Illinois
Western Illinois
Southern Illinois
Illinois State

East:
Central Michigan
Western Michigan
Indiana State
Ohio
Youngstown State
Bowling Green
Toledo
Eastern Kentucky

That is a much better and stronger lineup than you get with the MAC as it is. But, you still do have some strong teams still in FCS that needs to be FBS.

Stony Brook
James Madison
New Hampshire
Jacksonville State
McNeese State
UCA
Eastern Washington
Sam Houston State
Chattanooga
Weber State
Maine
Montana
Montana State
Tennessee State
Fordham
Delaware

I think these teams should step down since they are in over their head.

Eastern Michigan
Charlotte
Georgia State
Texas State
La.-Monroe
San Jose State
New Mexico State
Ball State
Miami, Ohio
Kent State
Akron
Buffalo

RE: Sagarin poll - stever20 - 10-30-2017 10:34 AM

I actually for the SEC and ACC in particular- but also for Big Ten and Pac 12- understand why you have divisional ratings instead of just conference ratings....

Take SEC or ACC. Teams only play 2 teams vs other division. So the quality of your division matters far more than the entire collection.

RE: Sagarin poll - ken d - 10-30-2017 10:47 AM

I also find Sagarin's SOS rankings to be interesting all by themselves. The following are the top 15 toughest schedules (to date - does not include future games). Won-Lost records are in parentheses.

1....Florida State (2-5)
2....Maryland (4-4)
3....Boston College (5-4)
4....Clemson (7-1)
5....Arizona State (4-4)
6....UCLA (4-4)
7....Texas (4-4)
8....Southern Cal (7-2)
9....North Carolina (1-8)
10..Arkansas (3-5)
11..Oregon State (1-7)
12..Notre Dame (7-1)
13..Tennessee (3-5)
14..Baylor (0-8)
15..Florida (3-4)

Looking at W-L records shows why many coaches and AD's are less excited about building great schedules than fans of college football are.

This really shows why a 16 team playoff is really needed to determine a true National Champion.

1. SEC Champion
2. ACC Champion
3. Big Ten Champion
4. Big 12 Champion
5. PAC 12 Champion
6. American Champion
7. Mountain West Champion
8. Highest ranked 1A Independents
9. MAC Champion
10. CONFERENCE USA Champion
11. SUN BELT Champion
12. -16 To be determined by selection committee.

Inevitably, any scheme like this is going to produce some unwatchable first round games. And, it puts your best teams at greater risk of losing one or more key players to season ending injury before the "real" playoff even begins.

I'm happy with the playoff not expanding. In fact, I'd be happy if there were no playoff at all. But, I'm clearly in a minority here. The genie isn't going back in that bottle. Based on current results, and projecting subjectively for the rest of the season, this is how I would see a 16 team playoff (estimated point spreads in parentheses).

Troy @ #1 Alabama (-39)
Marshall @ #2 Ohio State (-33)
Toledo @ #3 Notre Dame (-22)
Boise St @ #4 Clemson (-19)
UCF @ #5 Georgia (-10)
Virginia Tech @ #6 Penn St (-7)
Wisconsin @ #7 Oklahoma (-5)
Auburn @ #8 Washington (-3)

You can move the teams around, and even change a few. After all, I don't have a crystal ball. But I would bet you that the point spreads for the first round games would look a lot like these every year, no matter who the actual teams are.

For that reason, I would be inclined to drop the 4 lowest ranked teams (including conference champions) and give byes to the Top 4. Then, every first round game has the potential for an upset. The best G5 champion will always make the field, and at least have a shot at beating the #5 ranked team on a given day and making it to the next round.

But for the life of me, I can't see the school presidents signing off on either shortening the regular season or extending the postseason well into January.
