Puerto Rico - Redwingtom - 09-26-2017 08:54 AM

Has the trump administration been derelict in properly responding to this growing disaster?

It's hard to know since trump seems more consumed with the NFL and congress is consumed with attempt number 1,584,568 to repeal and replace the ACA.

Go...

Work is being done for Puerto Rico. Ships loaded with fuel, generators, cleanup supplies, food, water, etc.

Regardless of Trump's not tweeting about it... work is being done.

Probably a bit when in exact comparison to TX and FL, but that probably has a to do with the logistics and island status vs continental USA.

Ding ding ding!

And it's not just a matter of "sending ships loaded with supplies". Those logistics become extremely compounded when you're looking at a situation where port conditions are impacted as a result of the storm as well...

Too many critics, not enough thinkers.

Every one is clearly aware that getting help to an island is way more complex than a contiguous state. That's not the point.

Also, the problems in PR are way more severe than they were in either Florida or Texas due to the quality of the infrastructure by comparison. Additionally, PR got nearly as much rain as Houston did, but in a much shorter time frame. There are way bigger issues with potable water and issues with lack of power and lack of access to money. It wasn't until yesterday when a few ATM's started to come back on line.

It could be just appearances, but they seem to paint this administration as not concerned enough about this disaster. And like it or not, appearances alone can drive the narrative and cause severe harm to the administration. And it doesn't help when the president's first words about the disaster in days seem to tell them it was all their fault because they are in debt!

Quote:Some 700 Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema) staff are on the island, and a total of 10,000 federal workers, carrying out search and rescue missions and supplying basic food and water.

But at the same time Trump himself has spent the past five days mired in his self-made battle with African-American sports stars while seemingly oblivious to the plight of millions of Hispanic Americans in peril in a natural disaster zone.

The Trump administration has also refused to waive federal restrictions on foreign ships carrying life-saving supplies to Puerto Rico – a concession it readily made for Texas and Florida in the cases of hurricanes Harvey and Irma respectively.

In the last of his three tweets, Trump said that “food, water and medical are top priorities – and doing well”. But that may not tally with experiences on the ground where the governor, Ricardo Rosselló, has warned that Puerto Rico is on the brink of a “humanitarian crisis”.

In the hard-to-reach interior of the country, thousands of people are struggling with destroyed houses, a heat wave, and rapidly depleting supplies of clean water and food.
Trump finally responds to Puerto Rico crisis, saying island has 'massive debt'

Hopefully we're actually doing all we can...and it just appears that we aren't.

RE: Puerto Rico - q5sys - 09-26-2017 10:30 AM

Why is it when a disaster strikes anywhere else in the world the US responds with millions and millions in aide to help these areas... but when the US is hit why does no one else pitch in to help us?

Kinda makes you think...

All you have to do is check FEMA's website and twitter feed, but hey might as well toss in left wing talking points. Are incapable of doing your own research. WEAK

They're all about the feels. Thinking and using logic is just so insensitive. They prefer to make brash judgments and assumptions that give them more feels to complain about.

And patients from Puerto Rico are being relocated to mainland US hospitals.

http://www.wistv.com/story/36450603/evacuated-hospital-patients-from-puerto-rico-caribbean-islands-arrive-in-the-midlands

Quote:All hands were on deck at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport on Monday as the state continues to help medically evacuated hospital patients from Puerto Rico and islands hit by Hurricane Maria.

On Sunday, four critical patients arrived from Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands to be transported to one of 12 Midlands hospitals for treatment and more patients were expected to arrive on Monday.

Two of those patients are being treated at Palmetto Health hospitals.

On Monday, the airport got busy once again.

"Yesterday we got reports that it could be up to 300 patients that they have to move,” Jeff Straub of Spartanburg Regional Healthcare said.

Quote:This is the first time in United States history that the Department of Defense has activated the Natural Disaster Medical System program and it's happening right here in Columbia - one of only three places in the United States.

"I don't know that we get any benefit other than we are helping those in need,” Jonathan Calore, Incident Commander with SCFC said. “That's the whole thing behind the NDMS program. We are helping those in need from another location."

The state and hospitals will get reimbursed through FEMA. As of now they are unsure how long they will be activated at the airport but are ready to receive more patients.

But let's ignore that and continue the false leftist narrative that the feds are doing nothing.

Seems the PR Governor is OK with the President's attention and responses.

Quote:The president has been very attentive to the situation, personally calling me several times. FEMA and the FEMA director have been here in Puerto Rico twice. As a matter of fact, they were here with us today, making sure that all the resources in FEMA were working in conjunction with the central government.

We have been working together. We have been getting results.

Is Puerto Rico out of the woods yet?
- Last I checked over half are still without potable water and even more without electric.

I don't see any harm in leaving the thread open as long as there are issues being dealt with. It's not like anyone is being disrespectful to anyone here.

But whatever you want to do, I'm fine with.

I was just poking you a bit considering it seems that no less a person than the Governor of Puerto Rico answered your question on if the Trump Administration was "derelict."

RE: Puerto Rico - CatMom - 09-26-2017 01:03 PM

It also (partially) has to do with suspending the Jones Act for Harvey and Irma but not Maria.

Help is getting there; just taking longer.

RE: Puerto Rico - TomorrowHerd - 09-26-2017 01:24 PM

I used to live in a US commonwealth. The infrastructure is not like the ones in the states. The money that is supposed to be spent on it is wasted by graft, greed, incompetence and nepotism. (think detroit) The Island i lived on, Saipan, is a fraction of the size of PR, with only 60K+ residents. It still took 5 months to get everyone's power and water connected after a supertyphoon made a direct hit on them a couple of years ago. (obama was in charge) The (sea/air) ports are not made for getting large amounts of supplies quickly inland. Many transformers have to be custom made, and that takes weeks to months to happen, even more with the destruction in TX, and FL. Yes PR is screwed, but that is not the fault of the federal govt.
In Saipan we were told over and over again to have a months worth of food and water saved up for typhoon season. I use the same logic living here in Alaska, there are basically 2 ports that accept goods here. In case of another 9.2 earthquake, I know that it will take months to get things going again. This is why I now have 2 months of supplies put aside. I hope the people in PR also took the necessary precautions. (but I know they didn't)

RE: Puerto Rico - stinkfist - 09-26-2017 04:52 PM

as costs of repairs continue to rise faster than the rate of inflation (hence pot hole patching and bridge failure as the current norm), in what fashion does salvaging that island other than for military benefit????

at some point, people just need to wake the motherfuckkkk up and figure out how the USD and capitalism work in tandem.....

you just can't build shite and expect mother nature to just up and say, "good jobbber"

now you know why I gave every econ prof the shite.....'cuz they were full of it.....

people are so fk'n stupid.....

PR is like DR, very shaky power grid. BTW the last 2 hurricanes the DR had about 20 emergency shelters open with food and water, although they did not get a direct hit.

Right there are a lot of brown people on that island, clearly thats why time is derelict in helping them amiright... I mean he passed a disaster declaration six days ago and asked congress to get something on his desk to help them... But really he's just dragging his feet because $NonWhitePeople.
