The tournament, while a great event, needs serious modification.
There are probably other ways to do it, but I think my suggestion on tying participation into conference standings is the best way to increase the value of the regular season.
I'm afraid though that the NCAA is far too entrenched in their ways to allow any needed modifications to their cash cow.

Carolina had almost 800,000 come through the turnstiles for basketball charging football prices.

Even at some of our football first schools court side seats are reserved for donors only and they come at a significant premium. I'm sure however that UNC is much more like Kentucky in this regard than they would be a Georgia or Auburn, but even we have that level of support for hoops.

Places like UNC do a great job with basketball. They are the envy of athletic departments around the country.
Problem is you're not going to find very many elite basketball powers near the top of overall revenue production. UNC gets great numbers for its basketball compared to its football, but its football isn't getting great numbers compared to the football products at a lot of other places.

With Kentucky to the West and South Carolina to the South, this is why XLance wants the Gamecocks back in the ACC. Nothing could be worse for the Heels than having to compete hard in state with Duke, South Carolina and Kentucky, and still recruit nationally. The national competition for talent is getting tougher each year. If South Carolina sustains their improvement it simply makes things harder for the Heels.
In fact as the SEC continues to put more resources into basketball the impact will be felt most keenly in the ACC.
But not to fault him, the ACC wanting South Carolina and Kentucky, is like the SEC wanting Clemson and Florida State. Each would just be seeking brands that enhance their major sport.

We haven't explored the possibility of BOTH South Carolina and Kentucky moving to the ACC while the SEC expands to the west with Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, have we?

Since this thread is off track already... if I were the czar of college football, I'd bring back S Carolina and Maryland to the ACC. I'd also add WVU and Penn State. I think that's enough. 4 decent football teams, 3 of which also play good basketball.
Meanwhile, I'd have the SEC grab Texas, OU, Kansas and Nebraska. The Big Ten can have UConn to go with Rutgers...
