W&M defeated Marshall 114-104. I don't imagine what that game even looks like. Is zero defense games like these the ones people claim are exciting?

La tech lost by 3 to # 24 Alabama down to the wire

As usual, it looks like the top 1/3 of the league is pretty good and the bottom 2/3 is the equivalent of the poop emoji. By god, FAU played Ave Maria last night

W&M scoring 114 points is sure more exciting then watching a 53-51 slugfest. There was a time when Sonny Allen was coaching ODU that we also put up 100 points many a game. And no three point shot either.

W&M shot 64% from three point land last night. That is flat out incredible skill. Most teams can't do that in warm ups.

Outside of a few teams, that is not college basketball anymore. Coaches understand that defense wins championships. I remember when Duke won when Greyson Allen was a freshman. They were 114th ranked defensive team in the country during the season. Everyone remembers the run they made in the NCAA Tournament that year...well...they were the number 1 defensive team in that NCAA Tournament. Defense wins, whether we want to admit it or not.

I watched much of the game online. About halfway through, I picked up a book and started reading. You literally see more defense played at the Y than you did in that game last night. While shooting the ball at that high clip is impressive, I just don't find a game with zero defense entertaining at all. It's like watching the NBA All-Star game with less athleticism.

RE: 2017 basketball - ODUBB35 - 11-30-2017 08:45 AM

JMU had Mason beat with a 4 point lead with 7 seconds to go...

...and then they gave up a 5 point play (Mason hit a 3, and while the ball was in the air, a JMU player tackled a Mason player, who proceeded to hit both ends of a 1-and-1.)

Then JMU committed an offensive foul on the inbounds for another 1-and-1.

Never seen a team score 7 points with the clocked stopped before.

Balance wins. Our inability to go through games without long scoring droughts is why Blaine only won a single tournament game.

Defense wins in conjunction with offense. Teams that sacrifice offense at the alter of defense do not win championships.

There were no issues at Louisville until nearly 2 years after we hired a coach.

There was a lot of chatter in the athletic department circles about the shady things happening at Louisville long before they became public.

Yes. Not just their Athletics department, but many coaching circles. These issues have been all over the place for years, but the combination of (1) not being able to obtain tangible evidence and (2) coaches not wanting to "rat"/go against the "code" to other coaches, has allowed these things to go on for years (if not decades). This isn't just MBB. Depending on how far the FBI really wants to take their investigations, it'll be intriguing how many schools come up, along with any issues with Nike/UA, and the inclusion of FB. My feeling will be that the FBI will stop short and won't completely expose every entity, then allowing NCAA to continue their catering to the residual P5 and "save face."

What investigation?

You are correct. Balance wins. Great point guard play and the ability to get a stop when you need it the most, are two of the most important things when it comes to winning it all.

Yes, and I didn't mean it to sound like you can win a championship with no offense.

William and Larry are #1 in the country in 3 pt shooting (47.7%). ODU is tied for #272 (31.3%)

For the first three games of the season, they were 21/70 for 30%. For the last three games, they are 53/85 for 62%!

Yes, and I didn't mean it to sound like you can win a championship with no offense.

I think we can all agree that you have to play solid defense to win big, but I guess reason your original comment doesn't sit well with me is that Duke, philosophically, could not be further away from the "defense wins championships philosophy". That is to say, K, especially in recent years, seems to take more of a defense is a work in progress, and the effort and understanding on that side of the ball will come eventually, because kids want to win. As long as K teaches defensive principles, I think he trusts that when the time comes bare down and do what is needed for a win, the kids will get it done. This year's Duke team is a perfect example. They play no defense for the first 30 minutes of every game, then when their asses are on the line they turn into a top notch defensive team. That is not good, but I imagine by tournament time, they will figure it out. This approach is nothing like the JJ approach that demands defense before you can even move on to anything else. I have always been a confidence first person when it comes to coaching, and believe that allowing poor performance as long as it is building toward something positive is more effective than trying to prevent mistakes by punishing them or even emphasizing them, and I think that is what K does.

Sorry for the meandering post got a lot more into philosophy than I intended.

Connor Burchfield might be the best shooter in the country.
