Smaug's $0.02 - Smaug - 09-17-2017 08:41 AM

College football is single-handedly keeping the dermatology industry in mai tais. I have carpet-bombed my face with aloe since I got home, and I wore my sun hat, dammit.

Noon kickoffs. Ugh.

Listen at me *****. It's like I wasn't thrilled to be out there with 25,000 friends watching my school's football team. And win, even!

Anywho, on to the observations:

While we're lamenting our defense, I'd just like to throw out a couple of stats to chew on.
  • Coastal ended the game with 327 yards and 2 touchdowns.
  • Coastal completed 9 of 23 passes for 100 yards, and 3 interceptions.
  • This one frankly surprised me. Coastal was 6/15 on third down. Not stellar, but not atrocious, either.
  • Coastal averaged 4.6 yards a rush.

In short, our defense had itself a pretty respectable ball game.

Meanwhile, offense was pretty pedestrian. We only rushed for 169 yards and finished with only 274 total.

That said, we scored 30 points and capitalized on turnovers. That's what good teams do. They punish an opponent for its mistakes.

The Good

1. The D, particularly in the first half. It effectively pitched a shutout, giving up a blocked PAT for 2 and a field goal after we spotted them the ball at our own 35. Carolina adjusted in the second half, and they had us on our heels for a lot of it but was able to hold on at the end.

2.Oh, yeah. We forced 3 more TOs.

3. Tailgating, as always. Hanging out and eating with friends and fellowshipping makes gameday so much better.

The Bad

1.The Student Life tent right across from ours, and their 90 decibel top 40 crap. There. I said it.

2. These damn ant hills! I gotta start packin' my own Ortho?

The Ugly

1. Officiating? Good Lord, the zebras looked like the team that hadn't played together in 3 years. They probably added 20 minutes to the game, for no apparent reason.

2. I mentioned my sunburn, right?

Smack of the Day

"I like my Chanticleer extra crispy!"

So, what does this mean, Barbara?

Bottom line, this is a big win. It was a real gut check. There was a point that the game was on the edge of a blade, and it would have been real easy to let it get away, but then Coastal obliged us by missing a short field goal.

We needed this one, if we're putting on our bowling shoes.

So, we're on the road to UNT. Let's see who's the meaner green.

That's all I got. For now. I think.

Well said, sir. Hated to miss the game, but my wife is a few days post surgery. Doing well, but not game day well.

I'd missed your two cents worth. I read your words now and it reassures me that we are, indeed, back.

I couldn't figure out why they don't have the student affairs tent in the student tailgating area.

I agree on the ant hills. We brought any spray this weekend.

Because someone in our ADs office looked at the average age of the Blazertalkers and thought : " What's going to piss them off the most, without ever looking like our office had a hand in it?". Then they go home every night after a game and chuckle themselves to sleep.

It's a joke, you grouchy old men.

Since we have like 50,000 open seats wouldn't it be nice if those under 2 or so could get in without a ticket?

Have you contacted the AD's office?

Say what you want about Ingram, he's responded to most of my emails. Even the less than polite ones.

RE: Smaug's $0.02 - the_blazerman - 09-17-2017 07:57 PM

Well, it doesn't really impact me directly.
Imagine someone probably has contacted him.
All it takes is one contact to him to make him think.
Him continuing on with the policy more than likely means someone has tied his hands & he is not bucking the system.

So, no.

I'm guessing he just hasn't gotten the memo then huh?

Because obviously he will respond in a courteous manner & do something about it.

Some issues that need addressing:

1. The Student Life tent right across from ours, and their 90 decibel crap. They need to be moved to Blazer Village and out of the tailgate area. When you cant hear each other talking from four feet away from each other it's over the line. DJs should be outlawed from UAB games period!
2. They moved BlazerWalk and many people missed it waiting where they went the last time. Get a routine and stick with it. I talked to some former players and fans who were livid that they missed the walk because the route was changed and no one was informed.
3. The tickets for babies situation is just plain stupid. Mark was told by everyone its a bad idea. We need to flood is email with our objection to this rule.
4. Ants. Go out a day or two before the game to kill the ants so the little bastards are actually dead when you get there. I have bites all over. Poisoning them as we set up the tailgate did no good.

My letter to Ingram goes out today. This is not to just complain, it is to be constructive to try and give fans the best game day experience we can have.

RE: Smaug's $0.02 - the_blazerman - 09-18-2017 01:53 PM

Wasn't there early enough last Saturday to see the BlazerWalk, but if was moved as you mention that just seems deliberate.

RE: Smaug's $0.02 - ATTALLABLAZE - 09-18-2017 02:08 PM

Folks were pretty angry that thought they could stand where they did the last time and missed it or caught the tail end.

RE: Smaug's $0.02 - LairDweller - 09-18-2017 02:17 PM

for the first Blazerwalk, I stood where a UAB representative told me to stand...and i nearly missed it (as it went right where i was originally standing).
im guessing that changing it wasnt really intentional to make people angry...it was probably more incompetence

RE: Smaug's $0.02 - blzrclub80 - 09-18-2017 02:47 PM

I had no problem finding Blazerwalk. It was between the band and the cheerleaders. I actually had a better chance to see the coaches and players than week before last. I believe the problem was the number of fans were significantly less so they shortened the course taken. No way for them to know fan turnout until right when the walk was supposed to begin. I know the cheerleaders moved just about the time the walk was scheduled to begin. They stood just off the periphery road around on the west side of the stadium.

RE: Smaug's $0.02 - ATTALLABLAZE - 09-18-2017 03:28 PM

They should inform everyone. They know about what the crowd would be a week before the game. These last second knee jerk changes to something every game causes problems. I had no problem ether. smaug and I just folowed Mrs. Clark. The ones that complained to me were not so lucky.

RE: Smaug's $0.02 - BlazerMatt - 09-18-2017 03:31 PM

Good news is that they did away with stupid road blocks from game 1 that made it harder for people to leave after the game.

RE: Smaug's $0.02 - CourtsideBlazer - 09-18-2017 04:05 PM

BlazerWalk was a little earlier than advertised this week (about 9:45 instead of 10am) its always in the same place...from the buses parked over by the soccer field up the drive to the side gate. Watch for the buses (and accompanying police escort) to get a better idea of when its going to happen.

RE: Smaug's $0.02 - BAMANBLAZERFAN - 09-18-2017 04:23 PM

We should check with an experienced pest control person about all flying insects that we might encounter in and around our parking sites. Ants are a nuisance, but wasps and hornets can be hazardous to those with certain allergies if not just painful.

I think ants establish their mounds in the spring so if mounds are treated in August, they won't be back until next spring.

He has been contacted by many about this but does not seem interested in changing the policy.
