I am sure if you spoke to any fan of a team in a P5 conference, they could not imagine a day when they were no longer "P5" or "BCS."
With that, programs like UCONN, and USF have experienced being on the inside, then ending up somewhat on the outside looking in.
Questions for those fans: At what point did you start to believe you would no longer be in a conference that was considered a "major" conference or "power" conference? Aside from money, what is the difference regarding your program now, as opposed to then?
I love realignment and expansion talk, and I have always been curious what that is like.

I knew most would say that, but it is actually an interesting topic. It is a fact that UCONN and USF went from a BCS AQ conference to the American. I am curious to how that changed things, and when those fans started to realize it was going to happen.

True story. Over half of the current AAC members were once a member of a "Power" conference. Why single out USF and UCONN? Fanhood douchiness now confirmed.

Half of this league has been in a power conference at some point. Cincinnati, Connecticut, and USF were all in the Big East for nearly a decade, Houston and SMU were in the Southwest Conference for even longer, and Tulane was in the SEC until the mid-60s. Tulane's exit was more or less voluntary and before most of us were aware, but I think I can safely speak for the other 5 former power conference schools in saying -- it sucks.
From Cincinnati's point of view, although we were an independent prior to the '90s, we got to play powerhouse schools like Miami, Florida State, and Penn State on a regular basis. We also had a lot of other future Big East schools regularly on our schedule like Louisville, West Virginia, Syracuse, and Boston College. So although we were a fairly crappy program at the time, we got to play a power schedule. Once the Big East became a football conference and we were left out, in addition to schools like Penn State and Florida State joining conferences, we were pretty much screwed. When the Big East finally did come calling, it was a very exciting time for Bearcats fans. Then it was all taken away yet again.
I don't know what I'm rambling on about here... but it freaking sucks. That's all there is to it. I like this league, but unless we get a big pay raise soon, we are going to keep falling farther behind our old conference mates and will become even more irrelevant in FBS football.

I think its really good. The AAC is 10x better than the Big East.

You did know that a majority of the current AAC members came out of the CUSA 1.0/1.5? In the first round of expansion UC, USF and Louisville?
In the 2nd round of expansion UCF, Memphis, Houston, and SMU got in with a few years left on the BE's AQ status so arguably they got to enjoy it but arguably they weren't there long enough for its affects to take effect.
The BE changing into the AAC added Tulane, Tulsa, and ECU from that same CUSA.... we have never been "AQ."

Thanks. I knew there was a third, but forgot about Cincinatti. I didn't include Temple, since their situation was different as they just couldn't compete at the time.
So the question is for UCONN, USF and Cinci fans.
Follow up question for USF fans: do you view UCF differently now that you are on the same level regarding status and prestige (conference affiliation)?

Nobody anticipated Syracuse and Pitt jumping ship. The BE had just turned down an offer from ESPN to increase the media rights to ~$13M/year. This exodus led to WVU leaving the conference just weeks later. This was the point where most thought the power days was over. This set up the rest of the schools to scramble to land back in a power conference.
For UC fans the penultimate moment was after Louisville got invited to the ACC. Not only did we not get the call up (there were rumors the ACC were taking UConn, UC and UofL) but we lost our long time rival.
As far as difference in the programs recruitung has been a tougher sell. When we were in the Big East we were out recruiting middle to lower tier Schools in the Big 10 and Tge AcC. Now it is tough to out recruit them---Coach Fickell is doing it so far, let's hope he keeps the momentum going.

So I embarrassed myself by trying and failing to provoke folks here by implying that the Florida schools are too wimpy and stupid to reschedule football games during the biggest hurricane in history. Now I'll try the Glory Days approach, under the guise of legitimate questions, to get a rise. A lot of effort for a small thrill on an internet sports board, imo.

How long will this hold up ?
Can their be even more of a split, mybe, maybe not, might get into legal action ?
I find it very interesting that a lot of nonplayoff schools are in fact spending real big money on stadiums and such, if we keep doing this I think it will put pressure on the grand plans that is the current college football landscape

Sorry, I forgot to mention Temple was in the Big East for, what, 12 or 13 years? So 7 out of 12 members have been in a power conference, with 6 of those in the recent past.
Also Tulsa, Tulane, Memphis, East Carolina, and Navy all played very tough schedules in the independent days. Every team in this conference has had a taste of the good life, but we are actively being forced out.

ECU Football was accepted to the Big East in 2012. When the Pirates arrived in 2014, the train had left the station.
