Rod Carey - foch41 - 09-10-2017 07:30 AM

I was at the game yesterday and was watching Rod and for being a head coach he doesn't Lead at all. Wherever his team is, he makes it a point to be as far away from them as possible.

Everytime there was a timeout and the team was in a huddle on the sidelines, was Rod in the middle of them trying to inspire or coach or gameplan or anything?? NOPE, he was as far away as possible and walking farther. EVERY TIME.

The only time he did anything with the players was when he felt like chewing someone out. He comes across as a total a$$h0le who likes to show up when things are going good but when anything bad happens he runs away from the team. It felt like he wanted to take credit for all the good and run and hide for all the bad. Total Chode

This is an absolute joke. When Santa threw his interception Rod met him on the sideline, put his arm around him and talked to him calmly for a full minute. I've got some issues with Carey but people pushing this agenda that he's some big mean coach is ridiculous

+1. If you focus on the negative you can find that in any leader or coach.

I've been on this board for almost a couple years and have never seen you post except for Thai nonsense. I wish Carey was better like everyone else but this is a dumb analysis sir.

I was at the game & watched this exact same interaction after the INT. I was expecting a screaming session at the kid but was pleasantly surprised.

I'm no Carey fan either so for me - this was good to see.

B.S. he had a calm conversation with him, I was there he sat there and said some **** to him and when Santa walked away Rod stared him down with a disgusted look on his face for a good 10 seconds.

I have been on this board for over 8 years, it's not my fault that you didn't notice it but you are wrong. I watched this guy up close yesterday and he was no where to be found unless he was chewing someone out. Re-watch the game EVERY SINGLE time they were on a timeout and in a big team huddle he was as far from that huddle as he could be. If I were head coach I would have been dead center of that group of players. His job is to be a leader as the HEAD coach.

I'm not a Carey apologist but he is starting to relate better to the kids as the years go on. IMO, he was not ready to be a head coach when was first promoted. This year he has started to recruit the area more consistently and his team is motivated to play. He was coaching guys after each penalty. I sit close enough to hear him on some of his call outs to the team. He doesn't appear to be screaming (not showing anger) at the team but requesting attention and providing support.

Rip Carey for his inability to use timeouts properly but not this.

I think he's actually changed with players as well as with the media. Seems much more personable in the interviews this year and hardly see him chew out players so far. Even when Hagen booted another kick he didn't do much. I think he's trying new things this season.

This is absolutely NOT true. I sit on the 50 yard line and he met the players with a hand slap near the sideline almost every single time they came off the field. Additionally, after the the second blocked field goal, he personally took the entire special teams group off to the side. The negativity on this board has gotten totally ridiculous and the above post is not true at all.

RE: Rod Carey - Rabid Squirrel - 09-10-2017 10:34 AM

The Carey character assasination stuff is pointless. Carey is what he is. An average MAC coach who has flaws. NIU would be in the same boat if you swapped him out with 10 other coaches from the MAC. If WMU goes 7-5 this year is Lester the coach who "ruined" the program? (the answer is no, it's because wassink may suck) Carey has some old school mentalities that just don't work in today's game. So yes, he's stubbornly wrong he plays Graham or moving Maddie to WR, but he doesnt get any props for Moving Smith from RB to DE.

I'm ready to move on from Carey. He's the Ryan Graham of coaches. Too limited to be successful. But all this nonsense that he's Ebenezer Scrooge and Montgomery Burns rolled into one is absurd .

RE: Rod Carey - NIUHuskie4life - 09-10-2017 10:40 AM

This could honestly be the dumbest argument I've read on this board thus far. I don't love Carey...in fact I hate him. Yet despite that I can't make sense of this argument.

Agreed. I sit right around there as well and I saw exactly the same thing from Carey. I'm not the biggest Carey fan in the world either, but he was great with his interaction with the players all game yesterday. The players and staff seem to be pretty well in sync this year which is nice to see

+1- I watched his interaction with players all day and I saw nothing but positives. Carey does walk off to the side quite a bit, but I see that as collecting his thoughts and also letting his coaches coach without his interference

RE: Rod Carey - NIUSAE - 09-10-2017 01:25 PM

This is football. It's a game played on an emotional high. I watched Carey in both games in his dealing with the players as the come off the field and he is definitely not yelling at them like he has in the past, even those who deserve some tuning up( I know it's hard to believe that there could be a legitimate reason for the conversation at a higher decibel level). Like others have said he greeted many of the players with handslaps, even after the defense gave up the touchdown. As for avoiding the huddle, many head coaches leave that to the coordinators or other coaches (offense or defense depending on the situation). No biggie in my opinion.

Dude how many drinks deep were you at that point? I was sitting in the 8th row right at the 50 yard line. He had a calm conversation and then they went separate ways. Carey didn't even look at him after they split...he definitely didn't stare at him for 10 seconds. These comments are like middle school gossip bs.

Rod Carey now 4-1 vs the Big Ten. Man, he sucks

Only loss was against #1 ranked Ohio State. He's horrible..

Last year and before it seemed like he mostly yelled. He may have toned it down. Good for him and the team

So it used to be his overall record that was always the go to when defending him, now it's his big ten record. Sad.

It cracks me up, NIU loses and the Carey supporters are flying the players have to execute flag, they win and boy oh boy is that rod Carey one heck of a coach!
