Amazon building 2nd headquarters - Fort Bend Owl - 09-07-2017 03:11 PM

https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2017/09/07/amazon-plans-second-headquarters-dubbed-hq-2/640861001/

The winning city will see a potential $5 billion structure and 50,000 new jobs. Let the bidding war begin (but one caveat is that the city probably has to be 1,000,000 or higher to begin with).

I wonder if the city proper must be in excess of 1M or the metro.

They should build it in Little Rock Arkansas. That would be a big FU to Wal-Mart.

Austin, Toronto, Denver, Dallas-Fort Worth are some of the cities mentioned in two local reporters' handicap. It has to be a city with a big airport - that's an absolute prerequisite. Or the ability to vastly increase its airport size IMO. Amazon wants to have its own fleet of aircraft for shipping and logistical purposes - ala Fed Ex and UPS. I would also think a central location (or possibly east coast) would help Amazon's infrastructure as well.

My guess is it won't be close to Seattle so I think that will eliminate the rest of the west coast. No one has mentioned Houston but I think we'll be in the running too. It will probably whichever city offers the most to Bezos.

Best Jeopardy participant voice:

"What is Austin, Texas?"

Yeah, I found the article. Of course, they also said something about quality of work force so that shot Memphis' chance.

Our public education system here is pathetic. We have a LOW rate of HS graduates going to college.

Although we would probably rank high on their appeal-to-millennials scale.

It will be a city that has expansion capacity at the airport. DFW, Houston and Austin are too congested and no way they go to Canada, Trump would crush him. Denver is a possibility but also pretty congested. I'd look at a dark horse with talent and low wages like Salt Lake City or Raleigh, maybe even OKC.

Wait a sec... Amazon and FedEx are buddies.

I think it will be on the east coast / southeast outside of a major city.

I don't think there is a chance in tundra they'd put a HQ here.

Agree. I think it'll be in the metro area of Atlanta, Charlotte, Raleigh, Nashville, or Richmond. I could also see the DC suburbs.

Those locations (except dc) offer low land costs. They have good workforces and proximity to 85/95.

Texas cities are always in the running, but I feel like Amazon will go for a true east coast headquarters.

Think Philadelphia might have a shot.

The Star-Tribune says Minnesota's Governor may offer big incentives.

We've already got a massive distribution center a little south and west of Richmond proper. Course might be one of those in half the States by now.

As you mention close proximity to 85/95, but also 64 E&W, 81 NS. Not so sure if access to some huge airport is really necessary, RIC has international flights, is plenty busy, but not a La Quardia for sure. I would suspect most of the stuff gets around by truck freight anyway, but that could be woefully incorrect too.

As a MN citizen I would expect nothing less than this effort from the Governor's office but everyone from Portland OR to Portland ME will be offering big incentives.

I could see MN being shortlisted. But with our outrageous climate, relatively unfriendly business regulations, a tight housing market and a small tech / IT footprint, I just don't see it. The missing outweighs the current.

Yeah I think most states have distribution centers these days. They're starting work on their third in Charlotte soon. They built a massive one over by our airport since we are one of the Prime Air hubs.

I'd like to think NC has a great shot, but I often end up let down. We are always mentioned as a favorite the it ends up somewhere else so that's what I'm expecting this time as well.

If I were putting money on it, mine would be on the Atlanta area.
