Is there any network that can seriously challenge ESPN for televising NCAA sports? - DawgNBama - 08-27-2017 11:38 AM

I'm sick of ESPN's monopoly of televising collegiate sports!!! Economics has taught me monopolies are never good, and I believe it!! Isn't there any tv network that is willing to give ESPN a run for its $$'s in college sports? What happened to the CBS Sports Network? And why does every single tv network known to man sell their collective souls for an NFL contract? It's getting to the point of ridiculousness for a product that really isn't all that good anymore, IMO.

Fox is giving it a try.

CBSSN? They don't even participate in Nielsen ratings. People are cutting the cord and companies are not willing to dish out big bucks for sports like they used to. ESPN has a ton of channels and their own Web channel where plenty of games are put. Why would you want less channels for less events?

Maybe you don't like ESPN, but they're great for college sports. Whether you're a P5 or G5 fan. No other channel is gonna pay big bucks for G5 or mid major content. Why would they?

I'm not saying ESPN & all of its channels are bad. It's the fact that ESPN has very little competition that IS bad. I'll give you one good example of monopoly & how competition actually helped to improve the product: Jefferson-Pilot Sports aka Raycom Media used to have a near monopoly on SEC games and SEC fans hated it with a passion!!! Back in the 80's & 90's, it was not uncommon to see profanity either before or after JP Sports or even JP!! First, came CBS televising games which helped some, but what finally killed off JP Sports, aka Lincoln Financial, aka Raycom Media's SEC coverage was ESPN's creation of the SEC network, which is far superior to old JP Sports coverage. This is what competition does, and ESPN, the very network I'm complaining about, actually helped to significantly improve the product, a very good thing!! I just want to see someone challenge ESPN to make things even better.
Check out the below video to see how bad JP was.

I like CBSSN's coverage okay. FS1 probably has the best content aside from the smothership though.

We just started year 5 of FS1 and it's clear that even with half of the B1G football rights, they don't really care otherwise they wouldn't have cut their digital division to the bone and laid off the writing staff. The execs know their challenge was somewhat successful financially but gap in subscription fees is just too wide.

What a extremely dumb question.

FoxSports.com content has nothing to do with FS1 or FOX.

I know it gets really good ratings, but the quality of play is just kinda meh for me. I actually prefer college football and I'm a fan of a G5 school in addition to being a fan of a couple of P5 schools.

Hey JRSec, remember those old JP Sports SEC games? I still remember a "Dave Rowe & his Rowe's rewind" blecchh!!

Well with more customers cutting and shaving the cord, the OTA networks will be more prominent.
Look for Stadium to start taking a bit of the sports world with their OTA stations and the free streaming platforms in a few more years.

There's also the little issue that there really isn't any worthwhile media rights available. Which conference is due back at the negotiation table? The MWC in 2020? And they sound like they may forgo the current model.

The 3 studio shows that Stadium has, is what FS1 needs to really complete their lineup. They are the perfect shows to compliment FS1's lineup.

Turner. They have the rights to March Madness and a lot of NBA games as well as the UEFA Champions League and Europa League starting next year. They are going to be a big player in sports going forward.

Noone, all the P5s are either going to have there own conference Networks(same for pro sports) or have a Network through Espn like ACC and SEC.

EsPN then needs content for main and ESPN2 so the G4 + AAC will continually have ESPN use their right to match any other Networks offer.

"G4 + AAC". Lol. Just stop. G4 + AAC = G5.

For SEC fans (and ACC fans), ESPN is where you are going to find your games for quite a long time. The current SEC-ESPN deal, signed in connection with the launch of the SEC Network, runs through 2034. The deal covers all games in all sports except the 15 game tier one football package under contract to CBS through the 2023-24 season. CBS also sublicenses some SEC basketball and football games from ESPN.

Whether you personally like the NFL or not (and if there's one thing that people overrate, it's how much whether they personally like something means compared to the general population), it doesn't just receive "really good ratings". It's more than that - the NFL receives the highest ratings of ANYTHING on television (sports or non-sports) by a massive margin today. It's not even close. That's why every network "sells their collective souls" to the NFL.

Regardless, many companies have tried over the past several decades to challenge ESPN. FS1 has the best overall collection of sports rights compared to ESPN (e.g. MLB, Big Ten, Pac-12, Big 12, Big East, FIFA, USGA, etc.), but ESPN still dwarfs them. Even with more people cutting the cord, ESPN is still the most profitable cable network by a wide margin and (unlike many of the armchair pundits out there) they actually probably have an even larger *relative* advantage compared to other cable networks going forward (who never had as high of cable subscriber rates to begin with).

Man, what an awesome finish by USC over the Dawgs. Hey, I remember when WTBS showed SEC games in the mid-80s up until the 1991 season.

FOX would be the closest to getting it done seeing as the have the FOX/ABC, they have the FS1/2 to ESPN 1/2, and they have the FOX RSNs that can equate to ESPNU/NEWS/3 for content.

FS1 has a fighting chance. Early on, FS1 has a lot of MLB, golf, and NASCAR during college football Saturday.

FOX and FS1 highlights for weeks 1 and 2:

WEEK 1
- UTEP at #7 Oklahoma (FOX)
- #16 Louisville at Purdue (FOX)
- Texas A&M v. UCLA (FOX, Sunday)[Edit]
- #8 Washington at Rutgers (FS1, Friday)
- Maryland at #23 Texas (FS1)
- Montana St. at #24 Washington St. (FS1)

WEEk 2:
#14 Stanford at #4 USC (FOX)
Nebraska at Oregon (FOX)
Minnesota-Oregon St. (FS1)
ECU at #22 West Virginia (relegated to FS2 channel)

I don't see a listing yet for Cincy at Michigan or Iowa at Iowa St. during Week 2.

Surprised that FS1 didn't pick up one of those games for Week 2 broadcast. May be ESPN networks are showing these games, but channel not decided yet?
