Will NYC ever see football again ? - Curumim - 08-05-2017 09:41 PM

Sup ? Hope you guys are fine.

I got me thinking these days if a football stadium would be feasible in the city of New York. I mean, that must be the most expensive place to build anything on the planet, the traffic is... you know what it is... There are certainly some issues that may come in the way.

The city presented some plans trying to reach that olympic bid in 2012; the project was called "West Side Stadium". Here is a link about it: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Side_Stadium

What do you people think ? Is there a way to make a rentable NFL stadium in New York City ?

I've always wondered why the Giants, and for that matter the Jets don't play in their home state yet are still called NY teams. At least the Devils and Nets were actually IN NJ. Likewise the Rangers, Islanders, Yankees and Knicks actually play IN NY. At least the Nets had the courtesy to move to Brooklyn LOL.

It's simply too expensive and too much of a pain dealing with NIMBY's types to build anything bigger than an arena in Manhattan. We may get football in one of the outer boroughs but not Manhattan.

Redskins don't actually play in Washington nor do the Cowboys play in Dallas nor do Bills play in Buffalo

And the Rams and Chargers won't actually be playing in LA, nor the Dolphins in Miami or the Patriots in Boston (granted, they play in New England), the Raiders in Las Vegas, nor the Cardinals in Phoenix. Seems like half the teams in the league don't play where they claim or in a big city.

It is indeed funny the commercial strategy behind the names of the teams. Haha!

Do you have any construction site on mind ?

Besides New Jersey and Staten Island, Queens is the least dense borough although I think they'd go farther into Long Island. Or maybe in the New Rochelle/Yonkers area.

How's this for a crazy idea: create an artificial island just off Manhattan, for a new stadium?

RE: Will NYC ever see football again ? - C2__ - 08-08-2017 04:58 PM

Well, that is how Battery Park City was created (from the dirt dug out to lay the foundation for the World Trade Center), granted it's not an island. IDK, that's quite a bit of dirt and I think pretty much all buildable land is spoken for in Manhattan aside from Central Park, Washington Square Park, a few other real parks (their idea of a "park" is often a joke).

It took nearly a decade to rebuild the WTC tower. MetLife stadium is actually quite plain for 1.2 billion. That West Side Stadium site would have easily run upwards of 5 billion for no other reason than building over the railroad yard. It just isn't going to happen in Manhatten

Right, I was only thinking in the sense of unlimited money. Probably would take $5-10B to do a "Dubai style" artificial peninsula off Manhattan that included a stadium.

Again, the NIMBY's. People who live in NYC already complain massively about overcrowding and traffic, both foot traffic and vehicle traffic. Just know it'll be a bigger fight than World War II trying to build anything that massive in Manhattan. There's a reason Westside Stadium was shot down. There's a reason no outdoor sports team plays in Manhattan and two play in a much less glamorous state across the river.

I'm mildly surprised the Knicks still play in the heart of town.

NIMBY's are at least consistent. In NYC, there is this weird coalition between preservationists, conservationists and modernists and their respective visions of Manhattan.

It's why it's impossible to modernize JFK, but throw crazy money at LGA even though the airport is too small to improve. They want to tear down MSG to and create a new Penn Station.

Manhattan and San Francisco (city proper) are great places to visit. I can't possibly imagine living in either ..... probably because I'd only be able to afford a 50 sqft basement storage room.

Anything is possible if you put you mind to it. I found a $1, 000/month apartment across the river in Jersey. I'm sure you find something relatively cheap in Harlem, which has begun to lose some of its historic identity as being African American-only.

Well, I guess in my mind I thinking mid to lower Manhattan, but of course you're correct.
