Anthony just hit #21 of the year. Just before him Washington hit 4 consecutive homers before Murphy made an out. Rendon's homer made it 5 dingers in 6 at bats.

21 homers ties his career high. Rendon has reached base safely in every game in July and is hitting over .400 for the month. Of course those aren't close to Jose Altuve-type numbers but they're not shabby.
You can't tell me that something isn't going on with the balls this year (or the bats - or maybe both). The offensive numbers in both leagues is crazy.

I've heard a couple of national baseball reporters say that they believe the balls are being engineered tighter, yet still within the range of allowable diameters. There is apparently a somewhat small range they need to fall in to be legal, and the belief is that MLB is intentionally requesting that they be manufactured slightly smaller (i.e., tighter, hence more rebound action) to generate longer/stronger hits off the bat.
It's clear that there are one or more factors that are different from all prior years, though it's been turning up for a few years. But this year's jump in power and length is crazy.

You're right - I can't. Neither can some other folks who've taken a pretty close look at it.

If you read the article I just linked, they claim the range of standards is "laughably large", which would certainly allow MLB to say "we're not doing anything outside our standards" but still engineer the balls to fly farther. ETA: It's not just the COR but also the height of the seams.

It was not. I think I was remembering the Rider game and it was "only" 3 homers.

The Twins had a ridiculous inning in the 60's against a young Catfish Hunter where they did something similar, but this sounds even more incredible.

Harmon Killebrew, Tony Oliva, Don Mincher, Rich Rollins and Zoilo Versalles all homer in the 7th inning against the KC A's. Three off Catfish Hunter, two off Paul Lindblad.
don't believe 4 were consecutive though

Apparently, it's the only time the 5 HRs in an innning has ever been done against the same pitcher. I guess the other managers all decided to try to stop the bleeding.
I saw one other interesting bit of trivia - 4 of the other 5 instances of 5 HRs in an inning all happened against the Reds.

As many pitching staffs that are 13 man staffs these days, you would think the Brewers would have gone to the pen earlier. Especially because they were throwing a 28-year-old journeyman who was making his first career start after 108 career relief appearances (and he also had allowed a homer in the 1st inning so he gave up 6 in 2.1 innings). They did yank him after Rendon's homer.
I think another reason for the increased offense this year has been the warm weather throughout the country. I didn't realize this but Minute Maid Park is the best pitchers' park in the majors this year, and it's really not even close.
