"If both deserve to play, they'll both play."

I posted this idea a few weeks back and think it's a strong possibility. Each is unique in approach to the position and this mix can keep a defense off balance. Hard fact to read that we were 0-11 when Mullens didn't start or left early.

IMO, it's a bandaid overload approach against inferior opposition....

so yeah, it's possible that could suit us well....

however, a well coached team will see that by design if it's a situational schema...

if it's every other series and both perform adequate by design, then it should give the advantage to the offense through substitution and saving legs....

it all depends how hop-a-long plays it....

it's almost august and the fromunda is getting juicy.....

Or he could be full of it, already knows who's starting, and doesn't want Kentucky to know until they see who steps on the field that first drive. We already know Hop will play that kind of misdirection after the Mullens situation last year.

It shouldn't be about "deserving". It should be about who puts the team in the best position to win. Sure, if the game is out of hand one way or the other, let the backup play. If the starter is clearly struggling over a number of series, let the backup play. EJ showed in his first game how it goes down when you pull a starting QB thats moving the ball. I dont see these two QB' s skill set being so different as to mix them both in as "dual starters", to throw the other team off. It would only throw off our entire offense. Its not like youd be bringing in reggie collier after playing brett favre the first series.

*of course, reggie would have been starting and favre would have never seen the field as reggie's backup, but you get the point.

From reading that article, i get the feeling Griigs will be the starting QB. Sounds like a very mature and confident kid that understands what it takes to be the leader of a team. Probably his position to lose at this point.

Reggie Favre I'm not trying to nitpick your post because you're just going off quotes from the article I'm sure. But just wanted to pointed out that Griggs missed all of last year because he was academically ineligible. That's after being a Juco signee. Not exactly my idea of mature. Especially at that position.

being mature and "smart" are two diff things. i've also seen people slack off and turn things around pretty quick as far as schooling - if you're saying he was ineligible bc he was immature. yes, im only going by the article, but he sounds like he has his head on straight right now. guess we will see.

RE: QB talk....link - Eagle9 - 07-22-2017 12:23 PM

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure that when he got here last summer he considered leaving the team and basically skipped out on summer school and that's why he was ineligible. He may be a great that just went through a tough stretch. But it's still concerning for your starting Quarterback.

Not so easy anymore.

Jones passed 36 course hours over the summer to become eligible. Jones completed 21 hours at Northeast Junior College and 15 hours in correspondence courses from Southern Mississippi. The NCAA has since enacted a rule that places limitations on the number of summer-school hours a student-athlete can use for eligibility purposes—coaches know it as the "Dontae' Jones rule."

...Griggs has the Starting Position right now....is this a surprise really?

RE: QB talk....link - Reggie Favre - 07-22-2017 05:21 PM

Additionally, Keon has tiny hands. Like, SERIOUSLY TINY hands. No wonder he fumbled 6 times in 2 games, or whatever it was. Griggs it is.

Griggs is gonna be the guy. I'm feeling better about the QB position. He's got a lot of experience higher than the high school level. A lot less chance for freakouts and turnovers with Griggs. If we get above average play from the QB position, we are going to have a lot of wins this year (9+).

"The redshirt junior was 21-of-26 passing with four touchdown passes, all of which came inside the 10-yard line. Griggs was intercepted once (by Rachuan Mitchell) and also scored a rushing touchdown.

Howard, on the other hand, was not as effective. The former Laurel star threw three touchdowns (a 58-yarder to a wide-open Ben Olinger, a 75-yard catch-and-run by Tez Parks and a 12-yard score to Quez Watkins), but was also intercepted three times and finished with 11 completions in 23 attempts.

Griggs continued to exhibit the most consistency in the battle for the starting job."

...wow, I'm so so shocked over this news.

RE: QB talk....link - BeagleUSM - 08-12-2017 01:58 PM

Wonder what'd we do with Howard if he were to not get the job. Either redshirt him or utilize him somewhere else on the field. Too athletic for us to burn another year of his eligibility.

Thank you for the injection of sanity.

Nobody deserves anything. Even if they do, they're not getting it. We "deserve" to be in the AAC... at a minimum. But it ain't happening.

Redshirt him would be the ultimate plan. Would require Griggs staying healthy an entire season but it could happen.

That would def be ideal for the program. Of course, how many non freshman do we have on roster that could be griggs backup to come in gane when / if scores out of hand or if he needs to come out a play or two? No way we burn Rodriguez redshirt after burning howards last year. Unless its an emergency situation.

Howard in the wildcat would tear it up! That I can tell you.
