4 players represented for ODU, I will definitely take that.

Jaylon Ferguson got robbed of Preseason DPOY

RE: 2017 CUSA Preseason Awards - Doots4Dawgs - 07-17-2017 04:39 PM

Wasn't aware of Rice having defensive players.

Guess you aren't one of the conference's head coaches.

From the announcement:

"A trio of senior standouts headline the list of 2017 preseason Conference USA Football award winners, as chosen by the league’s 14 head coaches."

I will let my bias show a little here in saying that if I had to pick between White and new coach versus Brent Stockstill and Tony Franklin I'm going with the latter - especially considering how much Franklin's offenses improve in year 2, historically. White may throw 80 TD's this year but going in with the uncertainty of a new offense I'm a little surprised he got the nod.

One prediction that I will make right here right now is Middle Tennessee will have more than one on the offensive all-conference team.

One led his team to a conference title and a bowl win. The other lost to that QB's team at home in overtime. Pretty easy call if you ask me 04-cheers

You guys keep forgetting one thing. This is a 2017 thing not a 2016.

But I will allow it on the grounds it was Stockstill who called an audible and threw the ball into the ground when he should have just ran the damn clock out. Had we just ran the damn ball ODU is in the title game last year and this whole discussion this year is different.

If you get to redo a play that game, then we do too, and we would still win then. Everybody could play the "what if" game.... at the end of the day, the ink is dry on the history pages of 2016. So it's really not even worth the mention... unless everybody is getting a redo.

Let's review shall we.

1. I didn't bring up last year Topper 84 did. I merely commented on his comment.

2. I have no idea what you are talking about in regards to a redo, but I seriously doubt there was a moment that could be more undone than running out the clock for the win vs giving you an extra timeout from which to come back down and tie the game.

3. Brent outplayed White in every facet of that game sans the inexplicable audible at the end of regulation rather than running out the clock, which actually allowed White to gain an additional 80+ yards in the game.

Good luck in your non-conference. I expect another great game this year. Will be fun. Cheers.

RE: 2017 CUSA Preseason Awards - Gilesfan - 07-18-2017 10:08 AM

Mike White- 67% completion percentage, 10.5 yards per attempt; 37 TD, 7 INT
Stockstill- 63% completion percentage, 7.8 yards per attempt; 31 TD, 7 INT

Why is there even a discussion?

RE: 2017 CUSA Preseason Awards - ODU AGGIE - 07-18-2017 10:12 AM

Looks like we got three from C-USA on the Biletnikoff Award Watch List.

Jonathan Duhart, Old Dominion
Richie James, Middle Tennessee
Allenzae Staggers, Southern Miss

ODU now has six Monarchs on the various watch lists that have been announced to date.

Ray Lawry – Maxwell Award – College Football Player of the Year
Nick Clarke – Rimington Trophy – Top Center
Melvin Vaughn – Mackey Award – Top Tight End
Bailey Cate – Ray Guy Award – Top Punter
Brandon Addison – Jim Thorpe Award – Top Defensive Back
Jonathan Duhart – Biletnikoff Award – Top Wide Receiver

Last years stats should be a starting point for preseason awards. Just writing in the guy from last year is lazy. FWIW, Brent missed a quarter of the season.

But to answer your question, I can think of a few.

1. No Brohm
2. New offense
3. Some key pieces like receivers he threw to last year are gone.

I believe he still puts up big numbers but there is at least some uncertainty regarding his situation and whether he will be the best player in the league.

IMO, neither QB will win the MVP. I believe if MT wins the east and he stays healthy Richie James is going to be the MVP.

Well, the stats are interesting considering Stockstill had an injured shoulder for most of the year and still put up numbers about as good as White did in 14 games. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

RE: 2017 CUSA Preseason Awards - ThreeifbyLightning - 07-18-2017 10:48 AM

What Ole Blue is referring to is Stockstill played through a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder. He had that repaired earlier this year. I expect you will see MT go vertical more now that his arm will be back at full strength.

Well, he didn't put up numbers anywhere close to White. I don't think people realize the huge difference. Stockstill would have to make a massive improvement on last year.

Just think about this:

Every time each QB attempted a pass (not completed), White had 3 more yards than Stockstill. Assume each of them throw 40 passes in a game; White throws for 420 yards and Stockstill throws for 312. Take that over 12 games and you are talking about a 1,300 yard difference.

I can understand that there are some questions due to the new offense, but there are questions with the MTSU offensive line and running game as well that may not take pressure off the passing game. People just underestimate how much better White was last year.

Whoever put Alvin Jones and Wint ahead of Azeez Al Shaair is a window licker and shouldn't ever give another football opinion for as long as live.

Different offense. Brohms offense is much more vertical. He also had great catch and run receivers. MT had one in James. In addition to the aforementioned, MT lost four of its top five receivers before the season started. Only James escaped injury until cracking a rib late in the year.

There are no questions with our OL or running back. The only questions we have are at DL and at DL coach. Well, actually we know we have in the coach.

The starter is going to be Shane Tucker who started as a freshman (blowing up the league), got hurt, and got moved to WR when Mathers came. He was also lost for the year last year. He's moving back to RB and we've already moved some other RBs to WR. The OL is in good shape.
